The Academy of Burlesque has partnered with the New York School of Burlesque to bring the event Pink Light Burlesque to Seattle. This four-week burlesque class, is offered at no cost to breast cancer survivors.
The Pink Light Burlesque classes were created to address the needs of women in treatment and recovery, especially women seeking a ‘rock-n-roll’ way to regain confidence and reconnect with their bodies. For women who have undergone treatments that physically alter their bodies, addressing body acceptance is often a significant concern.
The Pink Light Burlesque program provide instruction on topics such as basic movement, confidence-building, history, costuming, makeup, choreography and stage theatrics.
The classes will be taught by the Headmistress of the Academy and reigning Queen of Burlesque Miss Indigo Blue, international performer and Academy Instructor, The Shanghai Pearl and Miss Candy Apples.
Miss Candy Apples, a two-time breast cancer survivor from Seattle, graduated from the Academy and has gone on to be recognized in the burlesque community. “Taking burlesque classes had a huge impact on my recovery. Learning to shimmy and shake made me feel vibrant again.â€
Pink Light Burlesque was founded by The New York School of Burlesque. Classes are held in honor of Jennie Lee, the original contributor and visionary of the Burlesque Hall of Fame, who passed away from breast cancer in 1990. Following the successful launch of the program in New York City, the program has spread to cities around the world.
“We encourage students to look at their perceived ‘flaws’ from a different perspective, to see them as assets to be played with in a sexy or lighthearted way,†-Miss Indigo Blue.
