Courtesy of the good folks at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, CultureMob is offering a special giveaway for Margaret on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Rather than summarize the plot of filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan’s acclaimed drama myself, I’ll leave that job to Fox’s official synopsis.
Hailed as “one of the decade’s cinematic wonders†(Richard Brody, The New Yorker) and named “one of the best films of the year†(Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times), Margaret is “ambitious, affecting, unwieldy, and haunting†(Ann Hornaday, Washington Post) and features complex performances from a powerhouse cast including Anna Paquin, as the film’s eponymous heroine (TV’s “True Bloodâ€), Mark Ruffalo (The Kids are Alright), Matt Damon (We Bought a Zoo, Invictus), and Matthew Broderick (Wonderful World)…in the story of a Manhattan teenager whose life is profoundly altered after witnessing a terrible accident.  Experience an emotional teen’s extraordinary journey to set things right as her innocent ideals come crashing against the harsh realities of the adult world.  It’s an “extraordinarily ambitious film,†raves Time Magazine.
No kidding, Time Magazine. I wrote about the film’s tortured production history HERE, and the finished theatrical cut certainly bears the scars of post-production woes; many scenes have an elliptical, unfinished feeling, and major characters drop in and out of the story with little rhyme or reason. You can sense the compromises Lonergan made to wrest Margaret down to its 150-minute runtime. That said, the scraps that remain are uniformly brilliant, filled with beautiful writing and pitch-perfect acting (Paquin deserves special recognition; along with Charlize Theron in Young Adult and Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk about Kevin, she gave the Best Performance of 2011 That No One Cared About).
Furthermore, the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack rectifies the editing issues plaguing the theatrical cut – it includes a 186-minute extended cut closer to Lonergan’s original conception of the film, and this longer version is complete and clear and even more devastatingly humane. In the extended cut, Margaret feels like that most treasured of screen rarities: a masterpiece.
And I have two copies of the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack to give away. Â It’s very simple. Â To qualify for the discs, email me at email@example.com, put “Margaret Blu-ray/DVD Giveaway” in the email subject line, provide your first and last name, and correctly answer the following question.

I’m going to stop taking entries at 8 PM EST next week on Friday, July 20th, so get your answers in before then. Only contestants within the United States and Canada are eligible, and entering the same name under multiple email addresses will get you disqualified.
