Since the release of their 2012 debut Shrines, I’ve heard more buzz about the band Purity Ring than just about any other from music aficionado around town. After one listen, it’s undeniable why. Purity Ring is made up of two members, Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (everything else), the album is one of the most mesmerizing to be released in recent memory. It’s rare for me to think of music as a creation, but this record seems as though it was hatched, and when listening to it from start to finish, it’s like watching something come to life. It’s a beautiful album, with peaks and valleys, moments that catch you off guard, and make you hit the repeat button over and over again.
The song I can’t get out of my head, and find myself playing on hour long loops is the single ‘Fireshrine.’ The beat and tempo are like nothing I’ve ever heard before, yet comforting and leave a listener rocking back and forth as if being lulled to into calm. This may be one of the songs where James shines brightest- her vocals are sweet and clear, with insightful and captivating lyrics. But it all comes back to what Roddick is doing with the production. It’s a masterpiece, and one that performed live will probably leave people speechless.
Neumos was lucky enough to book this pair, and it’s no surprise that the concert sold out recently. If you’re one of those lucky enough to see Purity Ring tomorrow, try not to brag too much to everyone else who missed out in a major way.
