TED: Miguel Nicolelis talks about using our brains to directly control machines
“Impossible is just the possible that someone has not put in enough effort to make it come true.” This is how Professor Miguel Nicolelis comments the limits of brain-machine interface technology in his TED talk.
Professor Miguel Nicolelis is one of the twenty most influential scientists in the world (chosen by Scientific American), best known for pioneering studies in Brain Machine Interfaces (BMI). His research lab has developed an integrative approach to studying neurological and psychiatric disorders including Parkinsons disease and epilepsy.
He is also the author of the book that we recommended two years ago: Beyond Boundaries: The New Neuroscience of Connecting Brains with Machines—and How It Will Change Our Lives.
Filmed in 2012 but only recently published on TED, in this comprehensive yet scientific talk Miguel Nicolelis walks us through his experiments in different monkey researches, where monkeys learned to control an avatar and robot arm purely with their thoughts.
