Have you become overly excited by the idea of throwing trucks with your mind? Now take it a step further and create real objects with your mind thanks to this Indiegogo campaign from Chile which promises nothing less than the ability of building objects with your thoughts alone. To be more precise, there are other techs involved in the process: along with the Emotiv EPOC brain-computer interface headset the project also involves the use of 3D printing technology.Behind the project it’s the team of Thinker Thing, a creative group from Chile who builds a complex system to interface the latest neuro-technological equipment with the latest in 3D printing machines to make objects with the power of thought. The machine they want to create requires no technical know how and can be used by anyone, young or old. Using their unique evolutionary process based on each object’s own ‘DNA’, the user’s mind determines how the objects mutate over each ‘generation’.
To put it differently, the system detects the brain patterns of the user using an Emotiv EPOC headset and uses that to to understand their emotional response to certain features in visual stimulus based on Thinker Thing’s ‘evolution’ system. The system then determines the underlying DNA features that evoke responses and use that in a natural selection process to refine the next generation of objects. If it does not make much sense to you, don’t worry, check out the video below or the Indiegogo campaign page and things will get clarified.
Thinker Thing’s first ‘mind-builder’ machine, the “Monster Dreamer” is also a school outreach program which has been fully funded by the Chilean government. The project has achieved several milestones already. On completion of the Monster Dreamer, the first people in the world to create objects with their mind will be children from the regional schools of Chile.
Thinker Thing will be visiting over 8 regions of Chile, from the driest desert in the world to the end of the world in Patagonia, inspiring and teaching complex scientific, art and engineering principles to very young children in remote rural regions via this engaging and fascinating project.
Thinker Thing will create a limited edition of 100 models of each of the creatures created by children from the regions of Chile. Each model will be numbered, and include a print of the child who created it, their brain patterns, the school and region they are from plus a certificate thanking the supporter for their contribution.
