Despite the fact that consumer BCI hardware is still a fledgeling industry, the competition is already starting to heat up. In the past couple years alone we’ve seen the emergence of a handful of new consumer EEG devices from companies like NeuroSky and Interaxon, and today we’ve just caught word that Emotiv – a longtime leader in the EEG headset market and pioneer in the BCI industry – is poised to release a new device: the Emotiv Insight.
The successor to the company’s hugely successful EPOC headset, the Emotive Insight is the next generation wearable device. In contrast to its predecessor, Insight is equipped with 5 EEG + 2 reference sensors for a higher spatial resolution, providing the wearer with more detailed information on their brain activity.
It’s sleeker, faster, smarter, and most importantly, comes with new, proprietary polymer sensors that offer strong electrical conductivity without any preparation. Translation? No more saline! Emotive’s EPOC headset was often criticized in the past because of the long application process and its need for a conductive gel or paste to in order to provide adequate signal quality, but Insight’s new sensors mitigate this problem entirely.
According to Emotiv, the company took time during the research and development stages to really listen to customer feedback, ensuring that they had the input they needed to design a revolutionary product from the ground up. Emotiv Insight is an elegant, light, and user-friendly 5-channel wireless headset which (we cannot emphasize enough) does NOT require any special preparation.
Emotiv Insight will allow you to optimize your brain fitness and performance, measure and monitor your own or your family’s cognitive health & wellbeing, and develop amazing new BCI applications.
Insight measures and tracks 8 different key brain states: attention, focus, engagement, interest, excitement, affinity, relaxation and stress levels. It can also perform basic mental commands such as push, pull, levitate, rotate and hard to visualize commands such as disappear.
It will also be capable of detecting facial expressions such as blinks, winks, frowns, surprise, clenches, and smiles.
Insight is fully compatible with Android, iOS, Mac, Linux and Windows Platforms.
