The Things that Made Yahoo Messenger the Most Popular IM Client to Download for Free a Decade Ago

Once a very popular platform for chat, Yahoo Messenger, it seems, has been forgotten by most people now.

Over the past few years, Yahoo has been trying to regain their market and users back, but competition has been very strong and Yahoo still have a lot to work on if they want to keep up. Younger people are probably not familiar with Yahoo Messenger anymore, but if you’re like me who lived through their high school life glued to their YM windows, you can probably still feel the gradual loss of this once big, popular program. Do you still remember how it was, coming home straight from school, opening your desktop and eagerly signing in to your YM account to chat with your friends, as if you guys weren’t together just an hour ago? It’s safe to say that Yahoo Messenger was everyone’s favorite messenger client, and it was a “cool thing” back then when you have it in your desktop. Unfortunately, it’s also one of those things that just “come and go”. Since I’m being nostalgic and all, allow me to reminisce more by writing down what once made Yahoo Messenger cool to download.

Free to Use

Number one on my list is it being free. It didn’t, and still doesn’t, require money to download. As a student at the time of his/her prime, that’s more than you can hope for. As I mentioned, it’s still free, so if you want to give it a try, you can download it to either on your computer or smartphone.

Games and Plug-ins

YM is the perfect tool to use back in the day, not just to catch up with friends, but also to play virtual games with them. That’s right, unlike other messenger apps today, YM allows you to play virtual games with the person you’re chatting with. It also has a variety of plug-ins from news, sports and weather, all of which are easy to download and install.

Don’t Forget the IMvironments

I must admit that the most fun feature of YM that I was practically obsessed with was the Doodle. Sometimes, I and my friends didn’t bother with the chat box provided, and instead used Doodle to exchange messages. Doodle brings out the artistic side of you that you didn’t know you have. You can also customize your yahoo messenger window by choosing from different themed environments available.

Social Media Support

YM now allows you to sign in using your Facebook account and chat with your friends. It also allows you to update your status on Facebook and Twitter.

Is it still relevant?

Sadly, ever since Skype was introduced, Yahoo Messenger has slowly lost its track. And Yahoo is yet to make adjustments by adding features that can compete with other messenger apps. However, the fact that they cut down some of their important features recently such as its interoperability with Windows Live, seem to screams concede. Are they accepting defeat already? Only the company can tell, but in the meantime, feel free to download the Yahoo Messenger app because for all we know, we might only have a short time left to enjoy it for free.
