While comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3, we see a small hardware update along with loads of additional software features in the S4.
Yet, it remains to be seen whether the upgrades are significant enough to warrant the additional price. The basic design of both the phones are almost the same, with no radical changes in the S4, but the S4 is a little thinner by about 8%. The S3 weighs 133g, whereas the S4 is 130g, which is not saying much.
Though the S4 is not chockfull of new features, the display is probably its killer feature, with 1080p screen. Yet, it has to be said that this is not a very big advantage, as any screen with more than 300 ppi is sharp, so there is not going to be much of a difference. The S4 has a 5 inch screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a 441 ppi, whereas the S3 is a 4.9 “ screen with 1280 x 720 p resolution and a ppi of 306.
The S4 is offered with specs of 2 versions, the 1.6 GHz and the 1.9GHz, whereas the S3 comes in 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz. Both the devices have the same RAM of 2GB and offer the same variety in storage models, namely 16GB, 32GB and 64GB and you can add more in the lower variants up to 64GB, using a microSD card.
S4 – More Juice
The S4 is faster with LTE, whereas the S3 is also fast with HSPA+, but not as fast as the S4. The S4 also enjoys better battery life. The actual battery life of S4 is more than what is seen, as it helps power a display of an additional million pixels. The camera on the S4 is also upgraded with 13 mp, from the 8 mp in the S3, and it has a dual camera. This means that videos and images can be combined both from the front and back cameras. Another special feature in the camera is the Drama Shot. This offers a burst mode, where multiple shots can be merged to form a collage. The Sound and Shot is another feature that offers audio recordings along with stills.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 is powered by Android 4.2.2. The camera is great and it boasts of a quad core processor that is truly powerful. The software solutions can work in different scenarios, such as acting as a remote for your television or DVR. It is also endowed with NFC and a battery that can be replaced, along with a micro SD slot for storage.
However, the S4 has a cheap plastic design and the screen is not so bright when compared to its competitors. The list of software features seems to be almost endless and could confuse some users. It requires a lot of time and effort in order to master these.
To Wrap Up
Can we say that the Samsung S4 is an upgrade over the S3? For many, this would not hold true, as there is not much difference in the design of both the phones. However, to give the newer model its due, the S4 has a bigger display and the processor is faster as well. In addition, it comes with a lot of additional bells and whistles. The S3 is still a very good phone, but if you are due for an upgrade anyway, the S4 does add something to the previous model, though only marginally. If you are looking for a smartphone that can literally do ‘everything’, the S4 is for you, being among the most powerful super phones in the world.
