Released within a year of each other, the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6 have a lot of common features.

Also, some of the existing features in the iPhone 5S have undergone improvisations in the iPhone 6. Additionally, the iPhone 6 incorporates some entirely new features, which were not there in any of the earlier iPhone models including the iPhone 5S. This article intends to compare some of the important features of these two smartphones, brought to you by Apple. Both the iPhones are obtainable as LTE wireless models and are available in three color options, comprising silver, space gray and white. Undoubtedly, the iPhone 6 costs much more than the earlier iPhone models, irrespective of the storage options you consider choosing.

Hardware Configuration

Although the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6 each feature a 64-bit architecture, the chipset and motion coprocessor used in both the iPhones are completely different. The iPhone 6 utilizes the latest hardware setup of the 1.4GHz dual core A8 chipset and the M8 motion coprocessor, released by Apple, while the iPhone 5S incorporates the 1.3GHz dual core A7 chipset and the M7 motion coprocessor, an earlier version of the same. The transistors in the new iPhone 6 are also considerably smaller sized when compared to the ones used in iPhone 5S.

Both the iPhone models are made available to users with 1GB of inbuilt RAM.

Verdict: The decrease in the transistor size has led to increase in the number of transistors being used. This in turn has amplified the efficiency of the CPU in the iPhone 6, thus resulting in the phone operating faster than the iPhone 5S. In other words, the iPhone 6 features a 20 percent faster CPU and a 50 percent faster GPU that enhances the overall performance of the iPhone 6.

Operating System and Software

The iPhone 5S comes loaded with iOS 7 as its operating system while the iPhone 6 functions on iOS 8 that has many upgrades. These upgrades have resulted in the look and feel of the layout of the iPhone. The new Reachability software in iPhone 6 allows you to access the full screen with just one hand by tapping the TouchID fingerprint sensor twice. The HealthKit is another utility tool provided by iOS 8 to keep track of your fitness and health records.

Verdict: The iOS 8 makes the iPhone 6 more user-friendly and easy to use. For instance, the Messages app can be used to send not only text but also locations, videos and voice as a message. Another new feature offered by iOS 8 is iCloud which helps you to work on your files using your phone and also keep them more organized and easily manageable.

Apple Pay

This is a utility tool available only on iPhone 6. Supported by iOS 8, this tool can be used for making mobile payments. Using the near-field communication feature, Apple Pay works hand in glove with TouchID and can be used for making online and app store purchases. All you need to do to make a purchase is to keep your iPhone 6 near a contactless reader and keep your finger on the TouchID sensor.

Verdict: Owning an iPhone 6 can be quite beneficial as it saves you the hassle of having to carry your wallet and/or cards wherever you go. Moreover, your payments will always be kept private.

Internal Memory and Storage

There are two storage options available for both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6. While the iPhone 5S comes in 16 and 32GB storage options, the iPhone 6 offers more storage with its 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage options.

Verdict: If you want to load your phone with a lot of music or video files or both, then the excess storage capacity of the iPhone 6 could prove to be beneficial. Currently, apart from the iPhone 6, only Apple’s tablets offer 128GB storage capacity.

Battery Life

The battery is inbuilt and not removable in both the iPhones. The iPhone 6’s battery renders up to 14 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of standby time, 10 hours of 3G Internet use, 11 video playback hours and 50 audio playback hours. This is greater than what the iPhone 5S battery has to offer, with up to 10 hours of 3G talk time and standby time, 8 hours of 3G Internet use, 10 hours of video playback and 40 hours of audio playback.

Verdict: The iPhone 5S was constantly blamed for low battery life. This drawback was overcome in the iPhone 6, which has proved to have a far better battery than its predecessor.
