Sony Xperia Z2 vs. iPhone 6 – Comparison of Specs and Features
One might assume that the newly launched Xperia Z3 is the natural competitor to Apple’s latest innovation.
However, forums and internet blogs are full with suggestions that users should stick to Z2, or buy it now, since the price has decreased due to the launch of the Z3. The Xperia Z2 is surely one of the most successful smartphones in the Xperia Line, but just how much? Can it compete with the latest devices on the market, namely the iPhone 6? Let’s find out.
Design and Display
One of the areas Sony has made an excellent progress is in the design. While most Android premium phones use plastic as a basic building block, Sony has produced a device built from metal and glass. The Z2 has excellent design, yet its large screen size is a bit of a problem. Set at 5.2 inches, the problems with the screen are the sharp edges and the flat surface. The absence of curved design is especially noticeable in daily use. The display of the handset, on the other hand, is a joy for the eyes. With a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels which translates to 424ppi, Sony delivers excellent sharpness and natural colors. Apple, on the other hand, has recognized the trends in design, and has completely changed the design of the iPhone. The latest version, the iPhone 6, is curvier than its predecessors, has rounded edges and at 4.7 inches, feels natural and light in the hand. The device is perfectly suitable for one hand usage, something we can’t say for the Z2. The iPhone 6 has a screen resolution of 750×1334, producing a density of 326ppi. The dimensions and the weights of the devices are the following: Z2 – 147x73x8.2 weighting 163 grams, iPhone 6 – 138x67x6.9 weighting 129 grams. You can notice that Apple’s device is thinner and lighter.
Hardware and Operating System
When it first came out, the Z2 was seen as one of the devices with the most powerful CPU. The handset can still compete, with the Snapdragon 801 quad core processor clocked at 2.3GHz. Additionally, the Z2 has one of the highest RAM memories on the market, set at 3GB. The downside is that there is not much built in memory, just 16GB, which might be a problem for heavy users. However, they can always buy a microSD slot and gain additional 128 GB of memory space. The latest device from Apple, the iPhone 6, offers less sheer power with dual core processor clocked at 1.4GHz and 1 GB RAM memory. However, the chipset is a 64bit, which is equipped with several features to boost the power, speed and energy consumption of the device.
The Z2 runs on the latest 4.4 Android KitKat. However, the device comes with many unnecessary Sony features. By the time users remove widgets and other features, the OS is pretty nice. However, it does require a bit of personalization and customization to get it right. The iPhone 6, on the other hand, runs on the state of the art iOS 8, with lots of new features for users to play with. One of the biggest additions is the HealthKit application which contains several health measurements and the NFC mobile payment system.
The camera is one area where Sony has always been superior to its rivals. The Z2 comes with an extremely powerful 20-MP rear facing camera, which makes carrying a dedicated camera an unnecessary luxury when leaving the home. Additionally, the size of the sensor is set at 1/2.3 inches, which allows for more light than competitors on the market. One of the downsides of the camera is that the application doesn’t offer many editing options. There are excellent features to take a photo, including a plethora of effects, but there are very few options for photo editing. Apple sticks to its highly successful 8-MP sensor in the iPhone 6. That camera is one of the most successful, and according to Flickr, the most used for photos in the past years.
One of the reasons the Z2 is a larger device is because it packs a large battery inside. A 3200 mAh battery powers up the device and various tests have shown that the Z2 can handle a lot of heavy usage. The battery found in the iPhone 6 is an 1800 mAh battery, and the company claims it can handle approximately 12 hours usage.
When the Z2 was launched, the price was at around $600. However, with the launch of the Z3, and since it has been quite a while, the price has decreased in the range of $400-$450. This might be the best time to take advantage of it, and get a fairly decent phone. Apple’s iPhone 6 is priced at $650.
