There was a time when the Galaxy Tab 10.1 had no equal in terms of critical acclaim on the tablet market and it was the main contender for Apple’s tablet releases of the time. In this article, the Galaxy Tan 10.1 goes against the Iconia Tab A500. The specs and features, as well as design, will be reviewed for both tablets to see which comes out as the best. The devices come with similar specs and for an average consumer it can get confusing when having to choose between the two.
The Iconia Tab measures 260 x 177 x 13.3 mm, making it slimmer than the 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.6 mm measuring Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Samsung device weighs 560 grams, making it the lighter of the two, as the Iconia Tab weighs no less than 730 grams.
The Galaxy Tab comes with a gyroscope, but lacks the proximity sensor that can be found on the Iconia Tab. Both devices come with 10.1 inch displays. The Iconia Tab can only support about 256K colors, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is capable of displaying 16 M colors. With less color support, the Iconia Tab has a 800 x 1280 resolution that matches the one on the Tab 10.1.
Once again we start with the Iconia tab, which has a 1 GHz dual core processor branded Cortex-A9. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 uses the exact same configuration for its processing unit and features support from 1 GB of RAM. The GPU is also the same, and we’re talking about a ULP GeForce GPU that is used in both cases in combination with a Tegra 2 T20 chipset.
The Iconia Tab has 16 and 32 GB variants for internal storage, and also supports microSD for extre memory. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn’t have support for microSD but instead offers a 64 GB version aside from the 16 and 32 GB ones.
The camera on the Iconia Tab features 5 MP and shoots at a 3264 x 2448 resolution. It comes equipped with LED flash and outranks the 3.2 MP lens that comes with the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which can only shoot at a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 resolution. One of the main features for both cameras is Geo Tagging. Video recording at 720p is available for both tablets at 30 fps. The two tablets also share the same 2 MP front facing camera.
As far as the battery goes, the Iconia Tab has two 3260 mAh units, while the the Galaxy Tab 10.1 uses one big 7000 mAh unit. You should expect getting at least 10 hours out of both.
Although the specifications are very similar, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 takes the edge with overall better stats. Furthermore, the Galaxy Tab uses the TouchWiz interface from Samsung, therefore another plus for the device.
On Amazon.com, you can get the Iconia Tab A500 for around $125, while the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is around $165
