iPhone 4S vs. BlackBerry Z3 – Comparison of Features, Specs and Price

Yes, the iPhone 4S is that good a device. Nearly three years after the initial release, the handset is still good enough to function as a dependable primary handset. While it doesn’t provide much size and performances, the 4S has some strong arguments on its side. It is worth noting that the 4S is one of the most successful iPhones. Additionally, it is a device that brought several changes for Apple.

Design and Display

The Z3 surely feels heavy and solid in the hand. The rectangular form with sharp corners is a bit outdated design. Additionally, the build materials, such as plastic make the phone even cheaper than it should be. One of the design changes BlackBerry has made, with the Z3 is placing the power, volume and mute buttons on the left side of the device. Several other buttons are placed on both the right and the left side. With dimensions of 140x73x9.3 and weight of 165 grams, the Z3 delivers measurements a tad too big for a 5 inch handset. The 5 inch screen display delivers resolution of just 540x960pixes, which translates to 220ppi. Even though it is a budget phone after all, one would expect a bit more. The iPhone 4S was one to start the increase in size of the display. The phone features a 3.5 inch screen display, with resolution set at 640x960pixels. Or in pixel density, that is 330ppi. Other measurements of the device are: 115x59x9.3, weighting 140 grams. And it is worth noting that the iPhone 4S is one of the first devices to be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

Hardware and Operating System

The Z3 is the first budget phone from BlackBerry running on the latest BlackBerry 10 OS. After failing to impress customers in the premium section, the company has decided to try a different approach: great OS, decent specs and low price. The processor in the device is the popular choice for budget phones, the Snapdragon 400 dual core processor. In the case of the Z3, the processor is clocked at 1.2GHz and comes with the support of 1.5GB of RAM memory. The RAM memory is one of the strong sides of the Z3. The same thing cannot be said about the memory space, as the device comes with just 8GB of built in storage. Users can upgrade the space with a microSD card, but just for an additional 32GB. For heavy users, that won’t cut it. Apple has always claimed that specs do not matter much for the iOS, but it sure wouldn’t hurt if the iPhone 4S had more RAM. The device comes with just 512MB of RAM memory and is powered by a dual core A5 processor clocked at 1GHz. The device ships with 16, 32 and 64GB of built in memory space. Out of the box, the 4S runs on iOS 5, but users can upgrade up to iOS 8. Those who like the iOS 7 version can stick to it.

The iPhone 4S was the first handset from Apple to feature the now popular 8-MP sensor. The company still sticks to the same sensor that delivers pictures of 3264x2448pixels. Even the latest iPhone 6 features the same camera. That tells you how good the camera is. The BlackBerry Z3 features decent, but hardly great 5-MP sensor. The advantage the device has is the front facing camera, as it packs 2-MP shooter on the front of the device. Apple’s device has a simple VGA shooter on the front.

If the camera is one of the strong sides of Apple since 4S, the battery is one of the weak links. The 4S has a weak, 1432 mAh battery that delivers only 8 hours of talk time, 40 hours of music play and 200 hours of standby. The Z3, on the other hand, delivers nearly 16 hours of talk time thanks to the 2500 mAh battery. For music lovers, the device can handle 84 hours of music.

The iPhone 4S was released more than 3 years ago, but the price is still set at respectable $300. Being a budget phone, the Z3 sells for $180.
