Huawei Ascend Mate 7 – Stylish, Powerful and Affordable
Huawei has come back with another attempt at an oversized smartphone. This one might be the Chinese manufacturer’s finest smartphone yet.
Of late, Huawei seems to be on the up when it comes to manufacturing Android devices. Its current smartphone line is much better, compared to its previous creations. Although this smartphone vendor is not a household name in the western markets, as it is in Asia, it seems to be making in-roads in North America and Europe.
It is only fair to say that the Huawei Ascend Mate series is yet to gain global acceptance. In early 2014, Ascend P7 was launched and has been the best we have seen from Huawei to date. It has high-end specs and a premium design. Later in the year, Ascend Mate 7 arrived. So what does it hold for consumers? Find out below:
The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 comes with a 6 inch display, making it one of the biggest smartphones around. Even with a large screen, this device is relatively light, weighing 185 grams.
The housing of the Mate 7 is made of aluminum and has chamfered edges. RF visibility is made possible by plastic sections along the bottom and top edges. The phone’s back is easy to hold and is not slippery. It also has a small lip surrounding the edges where the metal meets the front.
The display is a Full High Definition 1080p IPS display at 368ppi. The phone has bright colors, is clear, and you can even use it outdoors. The fingerprint scanner acts as the home and unlock button which can be activated with just a single touch.
The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 comes in two storage versions – the 16GB version/2GB RAM and the 32GB/3GB RAM version. Other than the RAM and storage, both variants are indistinguishable. Both smartphones have MicroSD card expandable slots.
The Ascend Mate 7 runs on the Android 4.4.2 KitKat. It has an Emotion user interface 3.0 that has been rebranded as the EMUI. Other than that, you get a wide array of themes you can download and further customize it. The ‘notifications’ tray has also had heavy customization as has the ‘Settings’ menu, making them easy to access with one scroll either to the right or left.
It has a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5 megapixel front-facing camera. The rear camera slightly protrudes from the phone. It also has HDR features. In good light, the camera gives out bright, crisp and natural looking photos. The focus is quick, and there is no over-saturation. As for the video, it does not use 4K making the videos less impressive than still photos taken with this camera.
The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is a good phone. As for the pricing, the 16GB/2GB version has a price tag of about €499, whereas, the 32GB/3GB version costs about €599. While it may not have the appeal of other well-established smartphones, it is still an enticing device that is worth owning.
