The iPad Mini 3 is supposedly the refresh of last year’s iPad Mini 2, but neither specs nor design seems to feature any improvements or changes at all. Today, we are comparing the new Apple tablet ot the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 to see what exactly is it capable of.
The Apple tablet comes with 7.5 mm in thickness and a total weight of 331 grams. The Samsung device on the other hand, features a thinner 6.6 mm profile and a weight of 249 grams, which makes it lighter than the iPad as well.
As far as design goes, the iPad Mini 3 is available in Silver, Space Gray and Gold color variants and features the usual aluminum chassis that gives it the premium look characteristic to all Apple products. The Tab S on the other hand comes in White and Bronze shades and has its chassis made of plastic, with its back sporting a perforated design, similar to what the Galaxy S5 smartphone has.
The iPad Mini 3 features a 7.9 inch display that uses a resolution of 2048 x 1536. The pixel density that comes with this screen is 326 ppi. The Tab S 8.4 not only has a bigger pixel density of 359 ppi, but also a higher resolution of 2560 x 1600. The Samsung tablet also comes with the bigger display which measures 8.4 inches, hence the name. While The Tab has AMOLED technology behind it, Apple sticks with the IPS LCD technology for its device.
Hardware and Software
When it comes to the processing power behind these devices, GSM Arena points out that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 features an octa core processor branded Exynos which has 1.9GHz and 1.3 GHz cores inside. It is combined with 3 GB of RAM which complement the rest of the high-end build nicely, while the iPad Mini 3 only has 1 GB of RAM and a dual core processor. However, the 1.3 GHz A7 processor runs on a 64-bit architecture.
When it comes to internal storage memory, the iPad Mini 3 proves itself more versatile, with 16, 64 and 128 GB version available, while the Tab S 8.4 is only available in 16 and 32 GB variants. The Samsung device however features support for micro SD, giving it the possibility of a storage boost.
On the software side, the Tab S uses Android KitKat combined with the Korean manufacturer’s own TouchWiz user interface, while the iOS8 from Apple is behind te iPad Mini 3.
The 5 MP rear camera combined with the 1.2 MP front camera of the iPad aren’t enough to compete with the 8MP rear shooter and 2.1 front facing lens combo of the Galaxy Tab, which offers higher resolution and better quality overall.
The iPad Mini 3 finally catches a break on the battery category, where its6471 mAh battery is superior to the 4900 mAh battery unit found in the Galaxy Tab S 8.4. However, both devices offer great battery life, it’s just that the iPad has the bigger power supply under the hood.
In terms of pricing, both devices have a starting price of $400, so the price tag shouldn’t be a critical factor in choosing one of these devices.
