Installing Android 5.0 Test Build on Your Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4

0

If you are an owner of a Samsung Galaxy S5 or Samsung Galaxy S4 and you can’t wait for the official release of Android 5.0 Lollipop for your device, you can now try the test builds. Keep in mind that the test builds are compatible with some specific models for now, so the users should be careful when installing them.

The XDA Developers released a SM-G900P NKD Test Build for the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S4 got an Android Lollipop Port. The Lollipop package for the Samsung Galaxy S is compatible with the Galaxy S5 from Sprint (SM-G900P). Keep in mind that this is *NOT* an official version of the OS, so install it at your own risk. Some of the features might not work, such as the SMS and other similar functions.

First of all, you will have to switch your device to download mode. To do this, you will have to turn off your device and, after that, press and hold home, volume and power buttons at the same time. After you will notice the warn message, release the buttons and press the “volume up” to enter the download mode. After that, access Odin and extract the tar.md5 files and pick in the PDA slot.

After that, begin flash and wait for the installation to be completed. Keep in mind that you will do this at your own risk and we’re not responsible if anything bad happens with your device.

It seems that in the past, the XDA users never thought of the original Samsung Galaxy S. Back then the Korean OEM understood the developers’ demands and was friendly with them. However, after the release of Exynos processor, the custom ROM industry had to adapt/catch up, but it was quite hard for the developers to make a great job due to the lack of documentation.

The Samsung Galaxy S II gave a hard time to developers porting the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) based to Samsung devices. However, it became possible to port later on.

In the last weeks, the XDA developers revealed the Android Lollipop with Touchwiz UI for the Galaxy S4.

If you can’t wait for the official release you can head to the XDA Developers’ forums and get it from there. The OS got released by the Frapeti, a XDA recognized developer, but keep in mind that this is an unofficial port of CyanogenMod 12 and it is compatible with the Galaxy S4 i9500 model and the Exynos variant.
