We’re comparing two smartphones that were released last year, one in January and the other one in August. They’re mid-range devices which are ideal for the least pretentious customers who are not willing to invest too much money on a smartphone, if they are not hardcore game players or internet-surfers. But let’s see which phone is better.
Designs, displays and sizes
The Grand S Duos 2 has a back panel made of polycarbonate, imitating faux leather perfectly, and the edges are “stitched”, giving it a premium look. The Lumia 625 has a plastic unibody design and there are five variants of colors you can choose from. The back is curved, but the corners are not as rounded as in the case of the Samsung device. The Nokia handset measures 133.3×72.3×9.2mm and weights 159grams, with 4grams less than the Grand S Duos S, which measures 146.8×75.3×8.9 mm.
Being larger, the Grand S Duos 2 features a much bigger display, which is TFT and measures 5.25inches. The supported resolution is 720×1280 pixels and the screen is pretty sharp at 280ppi. The Lumia 625 is settling for an IPS LCD screen sized at 4.7inches, whose resolution is much lower at 480×800 pixels, while the pixel density stands at 199ppi. However, only this phone comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection.
Hardware and OS
The Grand S Duos 2 has better specs than the Lumia 625, and first of all it has a quad core processor, instead of a dual-core processor, although they’re clocked at the same speed, 1.2GHz. So, the Cortex-A7 processor of the Grand S Duos 2 sits on a Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 chipset along with an Adreno 305 GPU and 1.5GB of RAM. The internal memory is expandable and has a capacity of 8GB which can reach 64GB. The initial OS is Android v4.3 (Jelly Bean), but you can take the big step and upgrade to v4.4.2 (KitKat).
The Lumia 625 is powered by a Krait processor backed by a Qualcomm MSM8930 Snapdragon 400 chipset and uses likewise the Grand S Duos 2, it uses Adreno 305 graphics, but the RAM capacity is very disappointing at 512MB. The internal memory copies the example of its rival, but the OS is Microsoft Windows Phone 8, which is upgradeable to v8.1
The Grand S Duos has a rear camera with a higher resolution of 8MP, but it shares many similar features with Lumia 625’s 5MP primary camera: LED flash, autofocus, touch focus and geo tagging, being capable to record videos at 1080p@30fps. However, the Grand S Duos 2 has in addition face/smile detection and the front camera is better at 1.2MP, while the Lumia 625 provides a VGA front camera.
The Grand Duos 2 comes with a user replaceable battery of 2600mAh, with 17 hours of talk time, while the Lumia 625 has a built in battery of 2000mAh, which supports 15 hours of talktime on 3G.
Both phones can be purchased from Amazon, and the Galaxy Grand S Duos 2 is priced at 275 dollars, with 75 dollars more than the Lumia 625.
