In order to keep up with the successful smartphone makers like Samsung and Apple, Sony recently came out with the strategy of launching two phones in a year.
One of the first phones to come under this policy was the Sony Xperia Z2. This device provided everything required from a modern smartphone, but with the added ability to withstand water – a crucial element that acts as a big problem for the current electronic devices. They have improved this device further with the Xperia Z3 a few months ago. The Xperia Z3 was also launched in the smaller version called the Xperia Z3 Compact.
The reason for coming out with the Xperia Z3 Compact is the need for a smaller display in a phone, which would make it much more handy. However, such phones should not compromise on performance as is the case with several mid-range devices that come with smaller displays. As a result, the Xperia Z3 Compact retains all the high-end aspects of the Xperia Z3, but without the large display that may prove to be a hindrance for some. The Xperia Z3 Compact comes with a 4.6 inch display that is 0.5 inches smaller than the display on the Xperia Z2.
The other aspects of the display, like the technology used are fairly similar, but they differ significantly in terms of the pixel density. Due to the smaller display and the smaller battery, the Xperia Z3 needs just 720p resolution in order to provide excellent display quality. The Xperia Z2, meanwhile, has become with a full HD display in order to provide the same level of clarity due to its larger screen size. Battery life is similar on both the devices, although it has to be said that the Xperia Z3 has enough on paper to suggest more than two days of normal usage, due to fairly large batteries.
Unlike some of the products from Samsung, Sony does not allow the users to open the back cover. This has been done in order to provide the water resistant functionality, but one disadvantage comes with the fact that the battery is non user replaceable. However, it should not be a big problem given the long battery life in both the phones.
Performance is more than adequate on the two phones even though there is a change in terms of the processor specifications. Clock speeds have not improved drastically with the Xperia Z2 offering a quad core 2.3 GHz processor and the Xperia Z3 Compact offering a quad core 2.5 GHz processor. However, the latest generation processor requires less resources in order to carry over its tasks. This is also one of the reasons behind the slightly better battery performance of the Xperia Z3 Compact. The primary difference between the two phones is in the size and price. Priced at just under $400, the Xperia Z3 Compact is only a shade over the Xperia Z2 in terms of price with the latter costing around $360.
