Microsoft Lumia 640 Review – The Best and Latest Mid-Range Smartphone

2

The Microsoft Lumia 640 smartphone is the latest smartphone from Microsoft that targets the middle class earners.

It is very important to note that this phone is very different from the latest Lumia 540 and Lumia 435. Other than the most eye catching features such as NFC, Glance Screen and SensorCore, the Lumia 640 is also built with an extremely solid chipset, 4G connectivity and an amazing battery life.

Here’s a detailed review of the Microsoft Lumia 640 smartphone.

Design

One thing you’ll notice with the new Lumia 640 is the amazing and natural feel it has in your hands. The phone is extremely light and thin, which makes it very easy to carry around and use as well. The shape of the Lumia 640 is smooth and it has rounded edges and a decent size, which makes it a perfect fit in your hands. There are several colors available for choice and they include bright orange, blue, black and white.

You won’t come across any hardware navigation buttons on this smartphone. However, the start, back and search buttons can be found on the touch screen itself and a one-time swipe from the bottom will hide or unhide them. The power and volume buttons are black in color to match the Microsoft logo.

Performance

The Microsoft Lumia 640 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset that is clocked at a speed of 1.2 GHz. The RAM you find on this gadget is no different from that available on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus flagships, which is a mere 1GB. However, for a mid-range smartphone, this is a decent package. While the Lumia 640 comes with the same processing power and RAM as the more high-end Lumia 830 and 735, the internal storage space you get on the Lumia 640 is a mere 8GB. However, you can expand this storage with a microSD card of up to 64GB.

Display

The 640 comes with a decent 5-inch display screen that tops a screen resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. With this screen, you will get a not-so-bad pixel density of 294 pixels per inch. The wide spectrum of colors and pictures will make up for any shortcomings of this screen, but generally speaking you won’t have any complains with this display for a mid-range smartphone. However, you’ll definitely notice a huge change in the display quality just in case your previous device was a higher-end product like the Lumia 930 or iPhone and Android flagships.

Battery life

When buying a phone, there are many people who put battery life among their top deciding factors. While you may be having a phone with an amazing RAM, you won’t enjoy using it if the battery life is poor. On this front, the Microsoft Lumia 640 will not disappoint you. The 2500mAh battery unit that this phone comes with is enough to last a whole day, or to be specific, at least 15 hours. However, when on Wi-Fi, the 640 can only manage 10.8 hours.

Camera

The Lumia 640 smartphone comes with a front and a rear camera. On the front there is a poor 0.9MP camera while at the back there is a better 8MP snapper, which is the same as those on iPhone flagships. There is no dedicated button for the camera. However, you can create a shortcut of the app to ease its access. Still, you won’t be disappointed with the photos both the front and back camera produce.

Bottom line

The Microsoft Lumia 640 is a cool device that is also very sleek, light and it has some of the best performance specs of a mid-range smartphone. At a price of about $180, you won’t have much to complain about this amazing smartphone.
