This is a comparison between Sony’s latest Z3+ flagship which was announced in May and which is expected to be released this month, and HTC’s One M9, which isn’t very different from the predecessor. In fact, both devices have similar designs, but their internal specs have been adapted to the new technology.
Designs, sizes and displays
Sony used glass again to cover the back of the new Xperia Z3+ model, and the corners are coated with a protective material, which will prevent them from scratching in case of accidental falls. Its physical dimensions are 146x72x6.9mm and it weights 144grams, while its color variants are white, aqua green, black and copper. Also, it’s water and dust resistant, being IP68 certified. The One M9 is available in Gunmetal Gray, Silver/Rose gold, Amber Gold and Gold/Pink colors and the body is made of metal, with two thin horizontal strips at the back, and having BoomSound stereo speakers on the front. This phone measures 144.6×69.7×9.6 mm and has a weight of 157grams.
The screen on the Z3+ is larger at 5.2inches and it uses IPS LCD technology, delivering a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels which gives a pixel density of 424ppi. The One M9, on the other hand, has a Super LCD3 screen with the same resolution, but which is sized at 5inches, and this is why the pixels are denser at 441ppi.
Both devices run on Android v5.0 (Lollipop) and their internal specs are identical, meaning that they’re powered by a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core processor consisting of a quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a quad-core 2GHz Cortex-A57 CPU which are paired with Adreno 430 graphics and 3GB of RAM. They share even the same memory capacity of 32GB, which is expandable up to 128GB.
Cameras and Batteries
The Z3+ has a rear camera with a relatively higher resolution of 20.7MP and the features include LED flash, HDR, 1/2.3” sensor size etc. The front camera is 5.1MP, which records videos at 1080p@30fps in HDR. HTC moved the 4MP Ultrapixel rear camera from the One M8 to M9’s front side, and used a 20MP camera on its back, which has dual-LED flash, HDR and supports automatic simultaneous video and image recording. The Z3+ has a bigger battery of 2930 mAh battery with 17 hours of supported talk time on 3G. The One M9 supports around 22 hours of talking time on its 2840 mAh battery. Remember that none of the batteries is removable.
On Amazon, the price of the One M9 is 630 dollars, while the Sony Xperia Z3+ has a price of 850 dollars.
