Given how the selfie market is shaping up, it is now essential for companies to try and offer specialized selfie phones.
Samsung hopes to do just that with the recently announced two models in China. The phones, Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 should make its way out to the international market as well. Let’s see what they deliver.
Design and Display
The design of the phones is a classic Samsung Galaxy design, with one small but important difference. Samsung is now trying to implement premium build material for the medium class phones as well, as evidenced by the Galaxy J7 and Galaxy J5. The phones are made out of plastic, but they do feature a metal wrap, which has now become the signature design for Samsung, aside from the flagships. The J5 has a 5 inch display with resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The J7 is the better version, with a phablet size of 5.5 inch display and the same 720 x 1280 pixels resolution.
Hardware and Operating System
On the inside, the J5 is powered by a quad core Snapdragon 410 processor, with the maximum clocking speed set at 1.2 GHz. The Galaxy J7, on the other hand, is a more powerful device with an octa core processor inside. They both feature 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built in space. The good news is that the devices can further expand their memory via a microSD card. As for the operating system, they run on the Android 5.1 operating system, which is the latest OS by Google.
We mentioned the biggest strength of the phones is their front facing camera. Both phones have the identical 5-MP snapper on the front and a 13-MP sensor on the back. But what makes the Samsung Galaxy J7 and its smaller brother Galaxy J5 great selfie snappers is the LED flash on the front. The J5 and J7 are the first Samsung’s phones to feature LED flash with the front facing camera.
The price is an interesting and intriguing factor. While selfie phones in the past carried a midrange price, Samsung is trying a different route. With price tags of $225 and $290 respectively, the J5 and J7 are closer to the budget market than they are to the midrange market.
