Canon Powershot D30 vs. Nikon Coolpix AW130 – Which Branded Compact Camera Should You Buy?

The Canon Powershot D30 and the Nikon Coolpix AW130 are two compact cameras with powerful configurations.

While the Canon D30 was released in February 2014, the Nikon device came into the market in the same month of the subsequent year. But which one of the two branded compact cameras is better in performance and appearance?

Sensor

The Canon camera has a ½.3” BSI-CMOS sensor that provides a resolution of 12 MP. It features a light sensitivity of 3,200 ISO and a minimum sensitivity of 100 ISO. On the other hand, the Coolpix AW130 comes loaded with a ½.3” CMOS sensor that enables the users to capture images at 16 MP. The minimum and maximum light sensitivity provided by this camera are 125 ISO and 6,400 ISO respectively. This means that the Nikon device offers 33% more pixels and 100% more maximum ISO. Apart from this, the sensor of both the cameras covers 28.07 mm2. Also, neither of the two cameras support RAW format.

Lens

To begin with, neither of the two devices offers interchangeable lens. The preloaded lens configuration of the Canon D30 is 28 – 140 mm, f/3.9 – f/4.8 lens. On the contrary, the Coolpix AW130 features 24 – 120 mm, f/2.8 – f/4.9 lens. In simpler words, the Nikon AW130 is faster than its competitor at the widest end. In addition to this, the Nikon device covers 4 mm more than the Canon D30 at wide angle and 20 mm at the tele end. Hence, the Coolpix AW130 offers better lens configuration.

The two devices have different models, but offer closely-related dimensions and weight. With that said, the Powershot D30 measures 109 x 68 x 28 mm, whereas the Coolpix AW130 hits the scales at 110 x 66 x 27 mm. Hence, the Canon device is 1 mm smaller; whereas the Nikon AW130 is 1 mm thinner and 2 mm shorter. When it comes to weight, the Nikon device weighs 221 g, while its competitor is 3 g lighter. As the two devices have negligible difference, neither of the two cameras has an advantage over the other.

Overall, the two devices have intense competition in appearance with similar dimensions and weight. However, the Nikon AW130 offers better configuration in performance with its powerful sensor, higher light sensitivity and better lens specifications. Hence, the Nikon device provides an edge in performance, while there’s a tie in appearance.
