Viber vs. WhatsApp – Which App Should You Download on Your Phone?

0

You won’t find any shortage of instant messaging apps these days.

Because there are too many of them, choosing the best one for your everyday use can sometimes be difficult. Two of the most popular and widely used messaging apps are Viber and WhatsApp. The two apps have some similar features, but they work differently from each other.

Choosing Between Viber and WhatsApp for Voice Calling Feature

One similar feature of both apps is a voice calling feature. Although Viber has offered the feature since day one and WhatsApp has only recently added it to their services, most of their users use voice calling to communicate with their loved ones. If you can’t decide between Viber and WhatsApp to use for voice calls purposes, read below for the differences in the apps’ features and function.

User Interface

Viber and WhatsApp vary in this part. WhatsApp does not use many frills and instead offer a straightforward approach to its features. Viber, on the other hand, offers a more feature-packed interface. If you launch Viber on your phone, you will see many options and features inside the app and if you open WhatsApp, you’ll have a more simple interface and everything you need is just a few taps away.

Cost

Both apps are free to download, and most of their features can be used for free, but that does not mean that they would stay free at all times. Viber’s features are free to use but if you need to make regular phone calls (landline or mobile phone), it will charge you a certain amount. Regular call rates vary per country. WhatsApp is free to use for the first year but after that, it will cost a subscription fee of $0.99 per year.

Accessibility

Viber and WhatsApp are available in Android, iOS, and Windows Phone devices, and they also have their desktop clients. Viber has a desktop program that you can install on a Windows PC. WhatsApp doesn’t require any download and instead uses a web client that you can access from your internet browser. However, WhatsApp’s web client can only be used if you’re using an Android device.

Voice Call Quality

As mentioned, Viber has a number of years of experience when it comes to VoIP calls so to say that it’s currently offering the better quality would be an understatement. However, even though WhatsApp is only new in this area, it’s been holding out well, and users are also enjoying a good quality of voice calls. When you use 2G on both apps, the quality of the call is not great but it considerably improves when you use 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

WhatsApp Wins

Even before WhatsApp launched its voice calling feature, it has more followers than Viber and other messaging apps. It now has more than 700 million users across the world compared to Viber’s 235 million. More people prefer a straightforwardtype of messaging app on their phone, and that is exactly what WhatsApp is known for and gives them. The only thing that Viber does better than WhatsApp is having a video calling feature, but who knows, maybe soon WhatsApp will also start rolling out its own.
