In this article we’re presenting you the smaller version of the famous Galaxy S5 flagship and the smaller copy of the Xperia Z3. The only thing these phones have in common is the screen resolution, and if we already caught your attention, we’ll give you the differences between them.
The Galaxy S5 features a plastic chassis with perforated dots, just like the original Galaxy S5, and there’s a silver frame running around the edges, which is made of plastic and painted to look like it’s made of metal. If you don’t buy a cover, to protect the sides, they will peel off after a while and will look awful. Overall, the phone looks cheep, but you shouldn’t underestimate its dust and water resistance, because Samsung obtained the IP67 certification. Also, likewise its bigger brother, the S5 mini has a fingerprint sensor hidden inside the home button. The physical dimensions of this model are 131.1×64.8×9.1 mm and the weight is 120grams.
The Xperia Z3 Compact has a more premium look, having its back made of glass, but the frame is not made of metal, but plastic, and has nylon corners like the Z3. The device has IP68 certification, meaning that it’s dust and waterproof. The available colors for its body are white, black, green and orange, while the S5 comes in variants of charcoal lack, shimmery white, copper gold and electric blue. The device is 9grams heavier because of the glass back, but it’s shorter and thinner, measuring 127.3×64.9×8.6 mm.
The screen from the Z3 Compact measures 4.6inches and it uses IPS LCD and X-Reality Engine technology. The screen is also Triluminos, which allows seeing wider range and more brilliant colors. The maximum supported resolution is 720 x 1280 pixels at 319ppi. The S5 Mini offers the same resolution on its 4.5inches Super AMOLED screen, but it supports a higher pixel density of 326ppi, which make the images look crisper and sharper. Also, this technology makes the colors look punchy, very vibrant, but they’re draining the battery very fast.
The Z3 Compact received the Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset from the larger Z3, which means that it’s powered by the same Quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 processor that couples with Adreno 330 graphics, but it has 2GB of RAM.
Regarding the internal memories, both of the phones are housing 16GB, but the Z3 Compact holds the advantage to support a higher maximum capacity of 128GB by adding a microSD card. The S5 Mini allows you to increase its storage only up to 64GB.
The camera from the back of the Z3 Compact is 20.7MP with 1/2.3” ExmorRS sensor. It uses Bionz mobile processing engine and has normal features such as LED flash, autofocus, HDR and better video recording capabilities at 2160p@30fps. Also, even if it doesn’t support 4K recording, it compensates with other features such as 8x digital zoom and ISO sensitivity of 12,800.
The S5 Mini comes with a modest main camera of 8MP which records videos at 30fps in Full HD resolution, and the rest of the features are standard.
The front camera from the Z3 Compact is 2.2MP, while the S5 mini has a slightly weaker 2.1MP camera.
On Amazon, the Xperia Z3 Compact is priced at 394 dollars. The S5 mini costs exactly 300 dollars.
