Nintendo is a big name in the games console industry, but it has strong competitors such as Microsoft and Sony. Its consoles made a good impression, but as it is normal, the company is improving them with each new generation, making internal changes, giving them bigger screens and new controls. Below, you’ll find a comparison between the fourth revision of the Nintendo 3DS and the XL version.

The New 3DS consoles are available in two sizes and the smaller one costs £150 ($232) and they come in black and white colors. Unfortunately, you’ll need to buy a separate AC power adaptor or a charging from Argos, which cost £7 ($10), or you can use your old adaptor for the old 3DS console. The charging cradle for the New 3DS has different dimensions compared to the previous version, so you’ll need to buy a new one from Nintendo, which costs £8 ($12). The whole package, containing the new console and the cradle costs £155 ($240), so you’ll be able to save some money.

The super-sized console has a price of £180 ($279) and it’s available in metallic blue and metallic black colors. Its front and back panels can’t be removed and customized like on the little brother, so you’ll be stuck with the basic version.

The New 3DS is fitted with a 3.88inches autostereoscopic 3D display and a 3.33inches touchscreen, while the XXL version features a 4.88inches autostereoscopic 3D display and a 4.18inches touchscreen. The resolutions are identical on both displays, meaning that the autostereoscopic 3D display supports a low resolution of 800x240pixels (with 215ppi on the 3DS and 171ppi on the XL), while the touchscreen supports 320x240pixels.

Dimensions and designs

The smaller the New 3DS measures 142×80.6×21.6mm and weights 253grams, while the XL version measures 160×93.5×21.5mm and weights 329grams.

You will easily reach all the buttons because the consoles were created to fit perfectly in your hands. The New 3DS comes with a matte plastic chassis, while the XL has glossy front and rear panels and a matte plastic interior. Its exterior is prone to fingerprints and the panels feel oily, and because of that, you’ll prefer the smaller version.

The SNES-themed ABXY buttons from the XL console are colored in red, blue, green and yellow, while the New 3DS has full-blown colored buttons.

The battery from the New 3DS is 1,400mAh lithium ion and has a lifespan of 3.5 – 6 hours when playing 3DS games, while when playing DS games, it lasts 6.5 – 10.5 hours.

The XL variant has a battery of 1,700mAh with a lifespan of 3.5 – 7 hours when playing 3DS games, and when playing DS games, it lasts 7 – 12 hours.
