This year, Asus released three variants of the Zenfone 2 for the mid-range lovers, and the high-tier version was the first one to come with 4GB of RAM. We’ll compare the Asus 2 ZE551ML with Xiaomi’s Mi 4i, which is smaller in size, but which falls also into the pure mid-range category of smartphones.
Designs and displays
The Zenfone 2, which was launched at the beginning of this year, came with a brushed metal casing, imitating the LG G3, and even has the volume buttons placed below the rear camera, but the power button sits on the top side. The back is curved on the edges and measures 152.5×77.2×10.9mm. This means that the screen is pretty large, being sized at 5.5inches and it uses IPS technology, but the maximum resolution is Full HD of 1080 x 1920 pixels with 403 ppi.
The Xiaomi Mi 4i has a simpler design, featuring a plastic back which is available in six colors, and somewhere in the lower side, there’s a wide speaker grille. The phone is slimmer and shorter, measuring 138.1×69.6 x7.8mm and its IPS LCD screen, sized at 5inches, supports the same resolution, but because it’s smaller, it can deliver a higher pixel density of 441ppi.
A larger screen is indicated for gamers and for surfing the web without struggling to read content without zooming in. But if it doesn’t have a high pixel density, it’s not sharp enough.
The Zenfone uses two combinations of hardware components, but both of them have a quad core Intel Atom processor. The version with 4GB of RAM has a Z3580 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, while the other one with 2GB of RAM is powered by a weaker Z3560 processor running at 1.8GHz. In addition, the graphics are PowerVR G6430 and the storage options are 16/32/64 GB, with the possibility to expand the first two ones up to 64GB.
The Mi 4i can be considered a winner because it’s powered by an octa core Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 processor with two quad core processors running at 1.7GHz and 1GHz, while the graphics are Adreno 405 and deliver superior performance. The phone doesn’t have a microSD card slot, and the internal memories have capacities of 16 and 32GB.
Their cameras are identical, both of them, supporting resolutions of 13MP – on the back, and 5MP – on the front side, and they even share the same features that include dual LED flash, autofocus, HDR, video capture at 1080p@30fps etc. Therefore, we don’t have a winner, because the images look the same on both phones.
The Zenfone 2 has a slightly smaller battery of 3,000 mAh, which is non-removable, likewise Xiaomi Mi 4i’s 3120 mAh unit.
The Zenfone 2 was launched with Android v5.0 (Lollipop) and on top of it was placed Asus ZenUI to give a unique feel. The Xiaomi Mi 4i came with a newer Android 5.0.2 version, which was skinned by MIUI 6.0.
The Zenfone 2 with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage is sold on Amazon for the price of190 dollars, while the variant with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage costs 330 dollars. In India, the Xiaomi Mi 4i is priced at 204 dollars.
