The battle between Instagram, Facebook and YouTube is worth keeping an eye on going forward.
This is because the three social network platforms have been on an “unofficial battle” to emerge the best and be the dominant force where social media is concerned. Depending on the source of the report that you read, it is difficult to determine whether YouTube has overtaken Facebook, or the latter is still the dominant force. However, what is not in doubt is the growth curve of Instagram in the last couple of years. Can it overtake YouTube and Facebook, though?
A few facts about Instagram that are worth knowing and attractive to marketers include the following:

Instagram has come a long way from the days when it was merely an app for iOS devices. It has continued growing and does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Currently, the number of monthly active users on Instagram stands at 300 million. Moreover, Instagram has more than 75 million daily active users. Out of the millions of people who use the Internet around the world, Instagram accounts for 20%, or a fifth, of this number. The US is home to about 77.6 million of the Instagram users.
However, Instagram has to find a way of dealing with the issue of inactive accounts. Currently, more than 30 percent of all Instagram accounts are inactive. Instagram appears to be one of the most popular social media platforms among people aged 35 years and below. This is because 90 percent of all its active users are under the age of 35. Estimates indicate that the number of active Instagram users in the US will reach the all-time high of 106.2 million by 2018. The impressive numbers offer adequate evidence that Instagram could outperform YouTube.
It is also worth noting that more than 70% of all Instagram users are outside the US. This is indicative of the increasing popularity that Instagram continues to enjoy around the world – a fact that ensures it does not stay too far behind Facebook and YouTube in terms of popularity. Currently, only 30 percent of all teenagers in the US consider Instagram the social media platform of choice and the most important. In this regard, Instagram has plenty of work to do to catch up with both Facebook and YouTube.
Therefore, although Instagram has not been in existence for as long as Facebook and YouTube, the impressive numbers that it has clocked is proof that the site is on the verge of giving the other two a run for their money. If teenagers and people aged below 35 years love Instagram the way they do, it is safe to say that this social media network has a bright future ahead. The only unknown now is whether the site has enough traction to go on and overtake Facebook or YouTube considering the many that have tried and failed in the past.
