WhatsApp vs Viber – Which Application Are You Using For Free Voice Calls?

3

More and more smartphone users are installing messaging applications to keep in touch with their friends. There are plenty applications out there and many have awesome features, but you can’t install a certain application if you don’t have friends who use it. You can’t call or send messages from WhatsApp to Viber and vice versa, so you and your friends should decide on what app to install on your phones. Below, you’ll find a comparison between WhatsApp and Viber, which will influence your decision.

User Interface

Viber has an attractive interface, but it’s very sophisticated and packed with features. The Live Tile option will allow you to attach chats to the start screen, but you will see only the number of missed messages, not who sent them. To have access to the call history, contacts and conversations, you will need to swipe your screen from the sides.

In April, WhatsApp’s user interface was overhauled with Material Design. At the top you’ll see three tabs for Contacts, Chats and Calls, and besides the text bar, there’s a round green-colored voice-recording icon which you can tap to record a voice message and send to your friends.

Call Quality

Viber has been offering voice calls since the beginning, and the developers kept improving the service. In addition, the Viber users can call landline and mobile numbers using the Viber Out service and depending on connection, the call quality can differ, but basically, the application delivers HD voice calls.

WhatsApp introduced the voice calling feature at the beginning of February, but at first, there were some serious issues with the call quality. The users complained about lags, echoes and calls randomly ending, but the biggest downside was the data consumption, which was as high as on Skype. In the past months, these problems have been solved, but the application still doesn’t support VoIP calls.

Costs and compatibility

Viber is free for lifetime, but if you want to call landline or mobile numbers, you will be charged. But don’t worry, the rates are very low and you can pay using a credit card. The application can be installed on computers running on Windows, Mac OS or Linux, and on mobile devices running on Android, iOS, BlackBerry OS, Series 40, Symbian, Bada and Windows Phone.

WhatsApp is free only in the first year of use, then you’ll pay an annual fee of 99 cents. You are limited to installing it on a smartphone and there are six supported platforms: Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian, Series 40 and Windows Phone.
