OnePlus 2 vs. Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime

0

In this article, we are going to compare the highly anticipated successor to the original OnePlus with Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime – a midrange smartphone from 2014 that still has a lot to offer.

OnePlus 2 launched just a few days ago and there is an understandably high amount of hype surrounding its release. After all, it is not every day that a popular company like OnePlus decides to call their newly released phone a “2016 flagship killer.” OnePlus 2 costs slightly more than its predecessor, starting at $329 for the 16GB version. Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime will end up less than $200, but at the cost of outdated specifications and performance that leaves a lot to be desired.

The Galaxy Grand Prime is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 while the OnePlus2 has a newer Snapdragon 810. Snapdragon 410 is a quad-core processor with Adreno 306 GPU. This chipset can be also found in Xiaomi Redmi 2 or ZTE Speed. In comparison, Snapdragon 810 is an octa core processor running at 2,500 MHz with Adreno 430 GPU which supports DirectX 11 and OpenCL 1.2. While the 410 does a satisfying job when used for common everyday tasks, it is not sufficiently powerful for gaming or heavy multitasking. The 810, which has also been used in LG G Flex 2 and HTC One (M9) is a future proof chipset capable of running even the most demanding games and applications.

The difference between these two smartphones is made even more apparent when we compare their displays. The Samsung has a 5 inch TFT display with just 540 x 960 pixels resolution. On the other hand, OnePlus is equipped with a big 5.5 inches, LTPS LCD with full HD resolution. LTPS stands for Low Temperature PolySilicon. The larger and more uniform structure of polysilicon lets electrons travel 100 faster than they do in amorphous silicon, enabling a production of higher resolution displays with higher speed. Probably the only good card in the hands of Galaxy Grand Prime is that some people may prefer to have a slightly smaller screen for better one hand operation.

Both phones have 5 MP front-facing cameras, but they differ in terms of a resolution of their main rear cameras. OnePlus 2 has a 13 MP camera, whereas the Samsung has only 8 MP camera. Despite the fact that 8 MP is definitely not a lot of megapixels, the camera does surprisingly alright job even with being nowhere near the quality of OnePlus 2.

The one area where Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime could theoretically shine is its 2600 mAh removable battery, but sadly it does not. The phone heats up quite a bit and users report several different types of problems regarding the overheating and high battery consumption. OnePlus 2 has a non-removable Li-Po with 3300 mAh capacity that can easily take you through your average day.

To sum it up, if you are on a tight budget then Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is probably not the phone for you. There are much better options for the same price from Chinese manufacturers and you can even look into smartphones running Windows Mobile. OnePlus 2 costs more than many other flagship Android smartphones from China, but you really get what you pay for. The phone performs great, looks beautiful, and has a wide user base to ensure a long lasting support.
