Top Antivirus Free Download Available For Windows 10?
If you upgraded to Windows 10, the good news is that Microsoft will offer you a built-in antivirus which is called Windows Defender, so you’re not required to install another program in order to protect your computer. But is this software very efficient, so you won’t need to install another one?
Windows 7 came with Microsoft Security Essentials, a free antivirus program that offered great results, but its latest version is built-in, likewise in Windows 8, and it’s named Windows Defender. In case you’re a newbie and don’t know much about antivirus programs, which one provides the most basic level of protection and in the same time is free, then Windows Defender is good enough for you. But that doesn’t mean that you should fully trust this program and visit all kinds of dangerous websites, because there are high chances that you’ll get infected with some viruses that won’t be detected by the built-in Windows Defender software and if this will happen, you will definitely need to install a more powerful antivirus program.
How efficient is Windows Defender?
The moment you upgrade to Windows 10, Windows Defender will become active and it will start scanning programs that you open, it will download definitions updates and afterwards, you’ll perform in-depth scans, to look in every corner for viruses. But you shouldn’t rely on this program, because in some software tests, it was behind other rivals, but you shouldn’t be too disappointed of Windows Defender, because it will delight you with other advantages. First of all, since it’s built-in, you won’t see any annoying pop-ups (asking for money), it won’t try to make money from harvesting your browsing data like other antivirus programs which did that to make a profit. Plus, the program is lighter and gives a good protection. Not the best, but compared to other competitors, it does a great job, especially because it’s free.
To make sure that you won’t be attacked by viruses and malwares, you must keep Windows up-to-date, update your browser and avoid plug-ins that could be dangerous (such as Java).
In June 2015, in the AV-Test for protection, Windows Defender scored only 0.5 out of 6, identifying 95 percent of the most known malware, and it caught 85 percent of the zero-day attacks. The best result was obtained by BitDefender, which managed to catch 100 percent of the widespread malware and had 100 percent of the zero-day attacks. Kaspersky was the second, catching 100 percent of the same amount of malware, and 99 percent of the zero-day attacks.
Besides Windows Defender, Windows 10 introduced other protections such as the SmartScreen filter, so you won’t download and run malware, while Chrome and Firefox have Google’s Safe Browsing, which will prevent malware from downloading to your computer.
Download MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit to protect your web browser and plug-ins
This anti-exploit program will protect you against attackers who will try to take over your computer when you’ll surf the internet. The program is free and it’s similar to Microsoft’s EMET security tool, but it has more security features and it’s more user-friendly.
MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit will block some of the most used exploit techniques, no matter if they are zero-day attacks, which the program hasn’t seen before. If you’re installing Enterprise Windows 10 on your PC, then you’ll get also Microsoft EMET and you’ll be less worried about being infected with malicious software, but if you’re a Home user, then we highly recommend you to use this combination: Windows defender and MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit.
What other antivirus is worth installing?
At some point, you will want to test another antivirus program, because you’ll become more curious and you won’t want to take any risk when clicking on random websites, which might contain malicious code injected into them.
The best solution is to install a paid antivirus product, and above, we already gave you two names: Kaspersky and BitDefender, which are well-known for their features and options, but we must warn you that they’re not very cheap (both cost $39.95 per year, for a computer).
Other antivirus programs recommended by PC Magazine are: Webroot, F-Secure Anti-Virus 2015, Panda Antivirus Pro 2015, which cost $39.99 per year, Emsisoft Anti-Malware 10.0, which costs $39.95, McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2015, which costs $49.99 etc.
Remember that when you’ll install a third party antivirus program, Windows Defender will disable itself, so if you’re not satisfied with the alternative and you’ll uninstall it, you’ll always have Windows Defender as a backup.
