Zuckerberg’s team of developers has been working on a personal digital assistant for the Facebook Messenger application, and this virtual assistant has been unveiled a few days ago. You won’t feel like you’re talking to the M character from the James Bond, but if you’re sad, the assistant will tell you jokes and if you want to go to a concert, then M will order the tickets. This technology seems promising, and we can’t wait to see it in action.
The M personal digital assistant will be integrated into the Facebook Messenger and when you’ll run this application, the virtual assistant will sit on top of the other assistants, being ready to take orders.
According David Marcus, Facebook’s vice president of messaging products, “M is a personal digital assistant inside of Messenger that completes tasks and finds information on your behalf. It’s powered by artificial intelligence trained and supervised by people”. Many are speculating that M will become as popular as Siri or Cortana, which run entirely based on AI, while others believe that M will be even more intelligent, because Facebook uses new hires, named M trainers, which can answer not only simple questions, but very complex ones, as well.
Wired reported that M will be able to make hotel reservations, it will make suggestions about getaways or what books to read, it will make travel arrangements, it will buy items and give you gifting ideas etc. M will easily understand complex questions, but the users will need to post them into a box (it’s like sending a message). The natural language will be decoded and M will return with the answers right away.
M has been tested for many weeks and it’s close to being ready to be launched, but Facebook hasn’t announced an exact release date. David Marcus added that “This is early in the journey to build M into an at-scale service. But it’s an exciting step towards enabling people on Messenger to get things done across a variety of things, so they can get more time to focus on what’s important in their lives”.
