Users have forsaken the phone SMS variant and have successfully replaced text messages with services offered by free apps such as Viber, Skype, WhatsApp and others. There are millions and millions of users that love these applications and use them on a daily basis. Even if the latter apps have common features, they also have distinctive ones that set them apart.

  1. WhatsApp

WhatsApp is the number one choice when it comes to IM and voice calling. Of course, none of these features will work without an internet connection. WhatsApp is very easy to download. You just need a mobile number so that you can start creating your account and then enable it.

Users also have WhatsApp Web. This is the computer variant of the app. And even though you will not have the same features that are accessible on your mobile device, this is still a highly used version of WhatsApp. Unfortunately, it is only free of charge for the 1st year of use, afterwards users will pay $0.99/year.

  1. Skype

Skype is considered the supreme provider of video calls. Lots of companies have recurred to Skype’s video call element as it is the ideal ‘tool” to use for live meetups. And of course, you also have the IM feature as well as the voice call one. If you have friends that are non-Skype users, the app allows you to initiate calls which are pretty inexpensive. Skype can be set-up on home computers, tablets, Smart TV even and handsets. As far as what operating system it runs on, you don’t have to worry because Skype function on the following ones :

  • Symbian
  • Mac
  • Chrome
  • Linux
  • Windows
  • Blackberry and of course iOS.

What is different about Skype is the fact that creating an account depends on you having an email addresses and not a phone number.

  1. Viber

Viber mirrors WhatsApp when it comes to creating an account. You will also require a phone number. If you use Viber you can easily send messages with multimedia files attached.  Free of charge voice and video calls are also permitted with Viber. You can use the app on the same operating systems available for Skype.

The thing that sets Viber apart from the other two apps is the fact that it is packed with features that are restricted to Viber devotees. You have a variety of stickers that you can use in your Viber messages and you also have the Viber Games element. The latter permits users to engage in games while chatting. Users also have the the Viber Out feature that allows them to call a non-Viber user.
