The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update was finally released for the Sony Xperia Z WiFi, ZL and ZR series via OTA (over-the-air). The new OS comes with the build number 10.7.A.0.222 and it brings many improvements for the aforementioned devices.
If you own a Sony Xperia Z, ZL or ZR device and you’ll receive an update notification, you will need to select the “Yes, download” option, followed by “Install now” (after the download is complete). After the mobile device is updated to the new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OS, it will restart instantly and you will see that it runs on the latest Android version.
Unfortunately, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update (build number 10.7.A.0.222) doesn’t come with a fix for the Stagefright exploit, which means that your device is still vulnerable to hackers’ attacks. This is the reason why we suggest you to not open any MMS that you receive from an unknown person.
According to Xperia Blog, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA update is also expected to be released for Sony’s mid-range devices such as: Xperia M2 Aqua, Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Dual. When the update arrives, Xperia M2 line will receive some improvements on the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Quick Settings along with some memory leaking issues.
We remind you that the Android 5.1.1 comes with improvements and bug fixes and it is not considered a major update for the devices we’ve mentioned above. As any other OTA update, depending on the region you live in and the carrier you are connected to, you will receive the update sooner or later.
According to some new rumors, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA update will not be released for the Xperia Z, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z2, as these devices will most likely be updated directly to the upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
