After months of waiting, while we’ve heard all kinds of speculations and rumors, Google has finally released its new pair of Nexus devices. In this article, we’ll talk about the Nexus 6P, which has been created by Huawei, not Motorola – the company that released the 2014 phablet. We’ll analyze the differences between them, and you’ll decide if the new model is a worthy successor.
Designs and Displays
The Motorola Nexus 6 resembles the Moto X 2014, being more like a larger version of this flagship, because it features a curved plastic back and a metal frame. The popular dip and dimple which are found on almost all Motorola’s phones have been added also to the back of the Nexus 6, and another advantage is the water resistance (a weak protection, tough). The dimensions of this huge phone are 159.3x83x10.1mm, it’s relatively heavy at 184 grams, but it doesn’t feel very uncomfortable to hold in one hand. Its screen measures 5.96inches, it’s an AMOLED from Samsung and it’s able to support a QHD resolution of 1440×2560 pixels at 493ppi. Above and below the screen, Motorola has added dual front-facing speakers.
The Huawei Nexus 6P comes with an all-metal body (aluminum), featuring a black horizontal band with rounded corners, which was placed in the upper part of the back, near the top side. This band contains the camera and the dual-LED flash, which sit on the right side. There’s a new fingerprint scanner (Nexus Imprint which will support the new Android Pay mobile payment system) which is able to recognize a fingerprint in 600 milliseconds. The three available colors for the aluminum back are Aluminium, Graphite and Frost, the physical dimensions are 159.3×77.8×7.3mm and the total weight is 178grams. The screen is also AMOLED with a QHD resolution, but it has a smaller size of 5.7inch, resulting in a higher pixel density of 518ppi.
The previous Nexus 6 came with a 32bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core 2.7GHz Krait 450 processor, which was paired with Adreno 420 graphics and 3GB of RAM. Huawei used the new 64bit Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core processor (four cores clocked at 1.55GHz and four cores clocked at 2GHz), which is paired with the newer Adreno 430GPU and 3GB of RAM. In addition to the 32GB and 64GB variants of internal memories, Huawei offers a more generous variant of 128GB.
Although the resolution of the previous Nexus 6’s rear camera is higher at 13MP, the images aren’t very impressive because of the poor software. At least, Motorola equipped the camera with OIS and dual-LED flash, to take bright photos at night, but the secondary camera isn’t extraordinary at 2MP.
The Nexus 6P features a 12.3MP Sony IMX377 sensor with f/2.0 lens, 1.55-micron pixels and laser autofocus. Some demo pictures have been shown at the presentation of the new phablet, and they looked amazing. The Nexus 6P can record 4K videos and slow motion videos at 240 fps. As for the front camera, it has a resolution of 5MP.
The battery of the Nexus 6P has an impressive capacity of 3,450mAh, which should last a lot longer than Nexus 6’s 3,220mAh battery.
