Apple TV 2015 vs. The Old Apple TV – Two Years Of Waiting Paid Off
Apple hasn’t given its fourth generation digital media player sufficient attention, preferring to promote its newest iPhones and the iPad Pro premium tablet. And this is why we believe it’s our duty to tell you more about this product, what it brings in addition to its predecessor.
The older Apple TV, which has been launched two years ago, came with an Apple single-core A5 chip which was backed by 512MB of RAM and has only 8GB of storage. The output video resolution was 1080p, the list of connectivity options included Bluetooth 4.0 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi and 10/100BASE-T Ethernet, while the other ports were for a Micro-USB, optical audio and IR receiver. The device, which was available only in black, measured 98(L)x98(W)x23(H)mm, it weighted 272grams and it was powered by a built-in universal 6W power supply.
The Apple TV 2015 supports HDMI 1.4, 10/100BASE-T Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0, but it lost the optical audio feature. Apple used an Apple dual-core A8 chip and paired it with 2GB of RAM, and there are two available storage options of 32GB and 64GB. The device has the same power supply and supports the same output video resolution, but it’s 10mm taller and much heavier at 425grams.
The old remote of the Apple TV 2013 was made of aluminum and it was called Apple Remote. The new remote is called Siri Remote because it has Siri integration, which means that it supports voice commands. By pressing the Siri button, you can “order” your Apple TV to find movies with a certain actor, to instantly rewind when you miss some important conversation in the movie you’re watching etc. Besides, the remote has a touchpad at the top, so you will no longer need to press the directional buttons in order to navigate through menus.
Channels And Apps
At this moment, there are 40 available channels for the new Apple TV, and you already know the big names. But, in addition, the users will be able to download applications which have been created by individual developers, since the new tvOS operating system gives the SDK developers the possibility to make applications (for example, weather applications), which can be downloaded from the official App store.
With the new Siri Remote, the users can control games, or they can get a third party game controller, with is compatible with the new Apple TV.
The 32GB variant of the Apple TV 2015 costs $149, while the 64GB model is $50 more expensive.
