The Lumia 950 is one of the two flagships that Microsoft has unveiled a few days ago and it runs on Windows 10, which came with the Continuum integration, allowing the users to connect their phones to monitors and keyboards. For this comparison we’re selected two other flagships, Apple’s iPhone 6S and Samsung’s Galaxy S6, and we’ll analyze all three devices’ specs and features.
Designs and Displays
The Lumia 950 is a nice looking phone which has a matte polycarbonate back and a large black camera lens with a triple-LED flash in front of it. The phone is bigger than its competitors, measuring 145×73.2×8.2mm and it has a weight of 150grams, while its screen is sized at 5.2-inch and supports a resolution of 1440×2560 pixels with 564ppi. The panel is an AMOLED, and Samsung is behind this technology, which is known for producing the most vibrant colors. The lowest price of the Lumia 950 is $549.
The Galaxy S6 has a glass back (Gorilla Glass 4) and metal sides, it measures 143.4×70.5×6.8mm and it’s lighter at 138grams. On the front side, below the 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen with a QHD resolution and 577 ppi is found the home button with the fingerprint scanner integrated into it. The lowest price of the Galaxy S6 is $579.
The iPhone 6S is all covered in aluminum (7000 series), and compared to its predecessor, is slightly thicker, because the new alloy is more durable. The new dimensions of this flagship, which has a new color option (Rose Gold), are 138.3×67.1×7.1mm, resulting in a total weight of 143grams. Being shorter, it means that it has a smaller display, which is a LED-backlit IPS LCD sized at 4.7-inch and whose resolution is lower at 750×1334 pixels (326 ppi). However, the images are pretty clear, the contrast is perfect and in addition, there’s a technology called 3D Touch, which detects the level of pressure which is applied to the screen. The flagship has also a fingerprint scanner hidden inside the circular home button. The 16GB variant of the iPhone 6S costs $649.
It seems that the Lumia 950 is the weakest smartphone between the three, featuring a hexa core Snapdragon 808 processor from Qualcomm, which contains two cores clocked at 1.82GHz and four cores clocked at 1.44GHz. The RAM capacity is 3GB, which helps the processor run flawlessly, while the internal memory can be increased from 32GB to 200GB with a microSD card.
The Galaxy S6 uses a very powerful processor built by Samsung, which is an Exynos 7420 with two quad core processors running at 1.5GHz and 2.1GHz respectively, being backed by 3GB of RAM. This time, internal memory is unexpandable and it’s available in three variants of 32, 64 and 128GB.
The iPhone 6S benefits from the latest Apple A9 Dual-core 1.84 GHz processor, which supports double RAM, but the phone comes with the usual three variants of internal memories (16/64/128 GB) and we’re guessing that Apple will never add a microSD card slot to expand the storage.
The primary camera of the Lumia 950 has the highest resolution – 20MP, and it uses the PureView technology, Carl Zeiss optics, while some of the standard features include OIS, autofocus and HDR, but the device has a triple-LED RGB flash for taking bright photos at night. The front camera has a resolution of 5MP, but the rival phones have secondary shooters with the same resolution. However, the Galaxy S6 has a 16MP primary camera with OIS, LED flash and auto HDR, while the iPhone 6S has a better camera than its predecessor, supporting 12MP, but the rest of the features have been inherited. Apple brought also a new feature called Live Photos and made the phone capable of recording 4K video.
