Surface Pro 4 vs. MacBook Air – Which One Deserves Our Appreciation?

The Surface Pro 4 was unveiled on October 6 and the preorders started the next day, but the tablet will be available in stores on October 26. The tablet runs on Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 OS and its price starts at $899. Its biggest rival is Apple’s MacBook Air laptop ($999), but Microsoft claims that its tablet is 50 percent faster, their designs are similar, as both feature a metal body, but Microsoft used a magnesium alloy, while Apple has accustomed its fans with its products made of aluminum.

Designs, Displays and Dimensions

The Surface Pro 4 has a 12.3-inch display which supports a resolution of 2736×1824 pixels, which results in a pixel density of 267ppi, and for protection against scratches, it uses a layer of 0.4mm of Gorilla Glass, while the backlight unit measures 1.1mm. The dimensions of the tablet are 292.1×201.42×8.45mm and it weights between 766grams and 786grams. Microsoft developed a special Touch Chipset and the tablet has also a stylus and it can be connected to a physical keyboard.

The MacBook Air has a larger 13.3-inch typical screen (non-touch) which supports a resolution of 1440×900 pixels with 128ppi. Since it’s a laptop, it’s much heavier, weighting 1.35 Kg, while its dimensions are 325mm (width) x 227mm (depth) x 3-17mm (height). The tablet has a full-size keyboard and a large trackpad which supports multi-Touch gestures (pinching, swiping and rotating) and it has another interesting feature which reduces toxic chemicals such as lead.

Hardware

The Surface Pro 4 is powered by the 6th Gen Intel Core M3, i5, or i7 (Skylake) processors which are paired with Intel HD graphics 515, 520 or 540, and 4GB, 8GB or 16GB of RAM. There are four variants of internal memories (SSD), and their capacities are128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB.

The MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (whose speed can be increased up to 2.7GHz), and it’s configurable to 2.2GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 (which can run up to 3.2GHz). The processor is paired with an Intel HD Graphics 6000 processor and it supports 4GB of 1600MHz LPDDR3. The storage options are 128GB or 256GB PCIe-based SSD and there’s an optional 512GB upgrade.

Battery life

The Surface Pro 4 should last 9 hours when playing videos, while the MacBook Air withstands 12 hours in similar conditions.

Ports

The Surface Pro 4 has a headphone jack, a cover port, surface connect, a microSD card reader, a USB 3.0 port and a Mini Display Port.

The MacBook Air has two USB 3.0 ports, Magsafe 2 Power, Thunderbolt 2 and a SDXC card slot.
