WhatsApp vs. LINE – Which Messaging Application Has Better Features?
We’re comparing an application which is used by over 900 million people every day, with an application which has over 210 million active users. The first one was launched in 2009, but it was bought by Facebook in Q1 of 2014 and its popularity increased over night. The other one came in March 2011 and evolved gradually. Both support voice calling, but LINE is free for life, while WhatsApp has an annual fee of 99 cents, but it offers a trial period of one year.
Both applications are using green as the basic color for the interface, but WhatsApp has a more intuitive interface which has been revamped every now and then. Since the voice calling feature has been added, now there are three tabs for Calls, Chats and Contacts. In one of the newest versions, WhatsApp received new icons, animations and the task bar from the top was merged with the three options (calls, chats and contacts) and now there’s a single color.
LINE’s developers focused more on icons than on text labels and the icons are impressive, but too crowded. The homepage has sections for Friends, Timeline, Chats and More (under it you will find Settings, series of games, the Sticker shop and the Line Camera).
On WhatsApp, you are allowed to share videos, images and voice recordings/music, but the maximum supported size is 16MB. LINE supports a variety of file formats of up to 1GB.
On WhatsApp, you can use emojis and stickers, while LINE has a timeline like Facebook and offers news, coupons and quick video snapping.
WhatsApp is supported by smartphones running on Android, iOS, BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone, Nokia Series 40, Symbian and Tizen, while LINE can be installed on devices running on Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Nokia Asha series, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Firefox OS.
With both applications you can make voice free calls to other users of the same app. However, LINE allows also making video calls and voice calls to landline numbers.
