iPad Mini 3 vs. iPad Mini 4 – Is It Worth Upgrading?

0

The Apple ecosystem couldn’t be complete without the iPad Mini tablets. In September, the iPad Mini 4 was presented without too much fanfare, although it deserved more attention, because it came with a lot of improvements, such a new processor or a more advanced rear camera. So, let’s see the list of changes that have been made to the iPad Mini 4.

Dimensions

Apple hasn’t worked on the screen of the new tablet, maintaining its size at 7.9-inch and the resolution at 1536×2048 pixels, which results in a pixel density of 324ppi. The screen is LCD Retina, but it doesn’t benefit from the 3D Touch technology. The fingerprint scanner is still in its place, hidden inside the home screen and the design of the tablet is nearly identical, only that the iPad Mini 4 is 22percent thinner and 10 percent lighter than its predecessor, measuring 203.2×134.8×6.1 mm and weighting 299grams (WiFi) or 304grams (3G/LTE). The dimensions of the iPad Mini 3 are 200×134.7×7.5mm and it weights 331grams (WiFi) or 341grams (3G/LTE).

Cameras

If you’re a fan of selfies, you won’t notice any improvement, because the resolution of the front-facing camera is till 1.2MP. But, the 5MP camera on the back of the iPad Mini 3 was replaced with a better 8MP camera with which you’ll take better quality photos for Facebook or Instagram.

Hardware and Performance

Without a doubt, the iPad Mini 4 has more advanced hardware capabilities, because the Apple A7 dual-core 1.3 GHz Cyclone processor which was powering the iPad Mini 3 was upgraded to an Apple A8 dual-core 1.5 GHz Typhoon processor which is 3 percent faster. Also, the PowerVR GX6450 graphics are 60 percent quicker than the PowerVR G6430 graphics, which will make the gaming a more pleasant experience.

Sensors and WiFi

While the sensors are unchanged, Bluetooth received a small upgrade from version 4.0 to 4.2 and the newer model supports now 802.11 a/b/g/n and ac (it’s a newer standard which allows WiFi to be more effective and faster).

Prices

It seems that Apple is selling both versions at the same price, which starts at $399 for the 16GB model and the highest price is $729 for the 128GB model with cellular data.
