Nexus 5X vs. Lumia 950 – What Features Do They Have In Common?
Google and Microsoft are old enemies, but all big companies have the same problem: they’re trying to stand out and impress with their products. LG made two Nexus handsets for us and they were well-received by the fans, but Google wanted a successor for the Nexus 5 2013 and suspended the collaboration with Motorola, which was replaced by Huawei, who created a new phablet. Microsoft released also two new Lumia devices – the 950 model is smaller and has weaker specs, while the 950 XL is a phablet and it’s as good as the Nexus 6P. But we’ll compare the smaller handsets: Nexus 5X vs Lumia 950.
Designs And Displays
Both handsets have a polycarbonate chassis and a similar design, meaning that they have curved edges and rounded corners, the rear camera sits in the top center and has the flash in front of it. The Nexus 5X is available in three colors of Carbon, Quartz and Ice and it’s taller, narrower, slimmer and lighter, measuring 147×72.6×7.9mm and weighting 136grams, while the Lumia 950 is available in Black and White colors and its dimensions are
145×73.2×8.2mm, resulting in a total weight of 150grams.
The screens have identical diagonals – 5.2-inch, but the Nexus 5X uses IPS LCD technology and supports a Full HD resolution, likewise the Nexus 5, but this model had a smaller screen and its pixel density was higher at 445 ppi. Now it’s only 424 ppi, but the images are sharp enough.
The Lumia 950 has an AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1440×2560 pixels, which gives a much higher pixel density of 564 ppi and the colors are a lot more vibrant and brighter.
The two devices have in common the Snapdragon 808 chipset with a hexa core processor clocked at 1.8GHz, which is backed by Adreno 418 graphics, but the difference is that the Lumia 950 supports more RAM – 3GB, with 1GB more than the Nexus 5X.
The Nexus 5X has the same storage options as its predecessor, they can’t be expanded and their capacities are 16GB and 32GB. Microsoft has spoiled the Lumia 950 owners with a microSD card slot, which allows the expansion of the internal memory from 32GB to 200GB.
Regarding the batteries, you’ll prefer the Lumia 950 because of two reasons: its unit is removable and has a higher capacity of 3000mAh. The Nexus 5 had a 2300mAh battery, but LG added 400mAh of juice, which will help the device last through the day.
Both front cameras have in common a resolution of 5MP, but the rear cameras are very different, not only in terms of resolutions, but they also support some features that make them worth their money. The Nexus 5X isn’t as impressive as the Lumia 950, because its primary camera is 12.3MP and supports only laser autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash and 1.55µm pixel size. It can’t defeat the 20MP PureView rear camera of the Lumia 950 with Carl Zeiss optics, OIS, autofocus, triple-LED RGB flash, 1/2.4” sensor size and 1.12 µm pixel size.
On the 16GB variant of the Nexus 5X you’ll spend only $349, while the 32GB model costs $429, Microsoft sells its Lumia 950 for the price of $549.
