Nexus 6 vs. Nexus 6P – Great For Photographers?
The Nexus 6 is Google’s first phablet which was created by Motorola, while the Nexus 6P belongs to Huawei and has a more premium design, featuring a metal body and, obviously, more advanced specs. But we were surprised to see that the rear camera of the Nexus 6P doesn’t have a higher resolution than Nexus 6’s main camera. Before jumping to the conclusion that the new phablet produces images of a lower quality, read this article and you’ll learn more about the new sensor.
For the Nexus 6, Motorola used a 13MP Sony Exmor IMX214, which didn’t make the best impression, even if the software included optical image stabilization. The Nexus 6P uses a new generation sensor, IMX214 (12MP), which supports larger pixels – 1.12 microns, while the previous sensor supported 1.55 microns. There are many other advantages that come with the new Nexuses, but we won’t be talking about both of the new models.
The guys from AndroidHeadlines tested the rear cameras of the old Nexus 6 and Nexus 6P and showed us the images taken with both phones, in different conditions.
First, the tester took pictures of a plane in the sky, during the day, and noticed that the Nexus 6P is able to capture more detail, because it’s helped by the HDR+ mode which is able to get more accurate colors and more shadow detail.
Then, the tester photographed a bowl with colored beads and a tree, focusing more on the shadows of the branches which fall in the right side. He concluded that the Nexus 6P is capable of capturing more detail and that the dynamic range is higher.
The next photo was taken under a covered porch, during the day, but wit no direct sunlight. Without a doubt, the details and focus were better in the images taken by the Nexus 6P.
The Nexus 6 had problems in low light conditions, and it was proved that the Nexus 6P’s sensor makes the images cleaner, brighter and clearer, while the colors are more vibrant. But that doesn’t mean that the Nexus 6P is flawless, because sometimes, it doesn’t focus properly on the objects. But overall, when setting the camera for a lower resolution, the images look much better than the ones that are taken with the Nexus 6, also with a lower resolution.
