The Note 2 from Xiaomi Redmi offers impressive specs and performance at a surprisingly low price.
It is a fast selling phone, and the company has managed to sell more than 1.5 million devices in China within a fortnight.
It is very similar in design to the previously offered Redmi Note. The battery is powered at 3060 mAh and is removable. The phone has two micro SIM cards slots and also a microSD card slot. The front is totally black, whereas the back panel comes in matte plastic and it is offered in several colors. It is 8 mm in thickness and weighs 160 grams. However, it does not feel premium due to the plastic used.
Screen and Display
The Note 2 from Redmi comes in 5.5 inches of IPS LCD technology, with a full HD of 1920 x 1080 p, resulting in a pixel density of 401. Color and accuracy are excellent, and the display is bright, though difficult to view in bright sunlight.
The device packs in a lot of amazing specifications, given that it is available at a very modest price. The Helio X10, MediaTed MT6795, 64-bitOcta-core processor has been used to power the device. It is combined with a RAM of 2 GB. The Note 2 is available in two versions of 32 GB and 16 GB. The former is the Prime model, and the latter is the basic model. Both phones come with a microSD card that allows expandability of storage.
The phone is supported by the Android 5.0.2 version and is combined with an overlay of Xiaomi’s MIUI 7, skinned over Android. The skin is very similar to the iOS and makes the performance smooth and slick. It also looks awesome and comes with attractive icons and animations. Updates are regularly available to optimize the software so that there are no bugs in the system. The use of the MIUI skin means that it might take some time to get updates of latest Android versions, such as the Android M.
Battery, Camera, Connectivity
It also includes 4G-connectivity, which is a new feature not present in previous Xiaomi offerings. The battery is removable, and this could be a scoring point for the device. The IR blaster is present on the upper part of the device and can be combined with an application to control a TV set or an audio appliance. The rear camera has a resolution of 13 MP and is capable of taking some amazing pictures. It is supported by a video recording ability of 1080 pixels, with a very quick focus time as well.
However, NFC is absent, though it is not a major disadvantage. Another missing feature is the Quick Charging, 2.0. Another drawback to the device is that it is a Chinese phone and is specifically meant for Chinese users, so the device does not offer support for English natively, and it does not offer Google applications. You can, of course, get it with a multi-language ROM, which offers support for Play Store.
The Xiaomi Note 2 can hold its own amidst the competition and is a great budget option. It is pocket sized and comfortable, but make sure you buy it with global ROM.
