HTC One A9 vs. Nexus 5X – Two Mid-Range Phones Running On Android 6.0 Marshmallow
HTC released a new affordable handset, but the interesting thing abut it it’s that it comes loaded with the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The other HTC smartphones are waiting to be upgraded to this version, so it’s a big deal for the Taiwanese manufacturer, however, this fall, Google released two Nexuses with this software and we’ll talk about the Nexus 5X, which was created by LG.
Designs and Displays
The Nexus 5X has a plastic body with a matte effect, so it doesn’t have a premium appearance, but it’s not ugly either. Unlike the Nexus 5, which came with a floating arc design, the Nexus 5X has a normal and rectangular body with curved corners and edges, it comes in three variants of colors (Carbon, Quartz, Ice) and it has a fingerprint scanner right below the rear camera. The device has an average thickness of 7.9mm, it weights 136 grams and has a screen sized at 5.2-inch with a Full HD resolution and 424ppi. The previous Nexus 5 had a 5-inch Full HD screen, so it supported a higher pixel density, which made the images look sharper.
The One A9 is 7.3mm thick and it weights 143grams. Its design is similar to Apple’s iPhone, which means that the device has a uni-metal body with two antennas lines on the back and a protuberant camera. Although the phone really looks nice, like any other HTC handset, there were many people who criticized the company for stealing iPhone’s design. Anyway, the home button sitting on the front side, below the screen, has an oval shape, it’s not circular, and it hides a fingerprint scanner, the screen has also a Full HD resolution, but it’s an AMOLED with more vibrant colors and deeper blacks, also, the pixel density is higher at 441ppi.
Both devices are housing 2GB of RAM, but the One A9 coupled it with 16GB of storage, while the other model with 32GB of storage supports 3GB of RAM. Luckily, HTC provided a microSD card slot, so you can store lots of videos and photos which have in total 200GB. The chipset used for the One A9 is a Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 with four cores running at 1.5GHz and four cores were clocked at 1.2GHz.
The Nexus 5X doesn’t have support of storage expansion and the device has the same capacity options, the processor is faster, featuring four cores running at 1.44GHz and four cores are clocked at 1.82GHz. They are backed by a newer Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 chipset and the more powerful Adreno 418 GPU.
Cameras and Batteries
If you’ll buy one of these phones to use it as a camera, then you’ll want to know if you’ll be able to take great quality photos. The answer is: yes, your photos will look amazing if you’ll take them outdoors, during the day. The resolution of One A9’s main camera is 13MP and the phone has useful features such as OIS, autofocus and dual-LED flash. The front camera is familiar, being the one that was introduced to the back of the One M7, it supports 4MP (Ultrapixel) and it offers good results.
The Nexus 5X has a 12.3MP Sony IMX377 sensor on its back which lacks OIS, but it supports laser autofocus and dual-LED flash, being capable of recording 4K videos, while the front camera has a resolution of 5MP.
Both devices can take advantage of Android’s new Doze feature, which saves the battery life by ending all the background processes. The Nexus 5X comes with the new the USB Type-C port, which can be used to charge its 2700mAh battery, the One A9 has a much smaller battery with a capacity of 2150mAh.
