Apple TV 2015 vs. Amazon Fire TV 2015 – Which One Is a Better Buy?
After two years of waiting, the fans started to become resigned to having to wait more for the appearance of the fourth generation Apple TV set-top box, but the company made a surprising announcement in September, saying that a new device will hit the stores in short time. Amazon was also busy making a new Fire TV streamer, and we’ll compare it to the Apple TV 2015.
Designs and Dimensions
The Apple TV and Fire TV have a similar design, meaning that they have the shape of a black box, but while the first streamer has a rounded-edge design, the latter has sharp edges.
The Apple TV measures 98x98x35mm (10mm taller than the predecessor) and it weights 425grams. The Fire TV is much slimmer and wider, measuring 115x115x17.5mm, while it weights 281grams. However, both streamers come with a black wireless remote control – Apple’s remote has a black navigational wheel and a Touch surface, while Amazon’s remote has, besides the a black navigational wheel an microphone button, other buttons and a microSD port. Amazon is selling also an optional game controller which costs £40.
Hardware And Supported HDMI Video Output
The Apple TV received a 64bit A8 processor with 2GB of RAM, and it offers two variants of internal memories: 32GB and 64GB. It supports 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and the list of ports include the power in, HDMI 1.43 out, Ethernet, and USB-C. Unfortunately, the Apple TV doesn’t offer 4K video playback, but HDMI video output in 1080p or 720p.
The Fire TV is powered by a 2GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, which is backed by a Power VR GX6250 600MHz GPU graphics and 2GB of RAM, but its internal memory can be expanded from 8GB up to 128GB. Its performance is very snappy and the awesome part about the Fire TV is the ability to play 4K videos at 2160p, featuring a HDCP 2.2-compatible HDMI port. Also, its connectivity options include 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
Apple launched a new operating system for its streamer, tvOS which has its own app store from where the users can buy TV content. Its background is white and thanks to Siri’s integration, the users can interact with the device. There’s a different screen for day time or nighttime, and the sports fans can watch channels in split-screen viewing.
The Fire TV comes loaded with Amazon FireOS 5.0 Bellini, which offers a movie and TV section only for 4K content.
