Snapchat Clarifies New Terms of Service, Reassures Users Snaps are Still Private

1

Just recently, Snapchat reported that it had updated its terms of service, something that caused some backlashes in the app’s community.

According to the many, that had bothered to read the updated terms, most were quick to interpret them as to imply that the company was going to keep hold of their photos and use them in their ad campaigns. Well, to some extent this is true. However, Snapchat has been doing this before with content such as Live Stories where the app has to save the videos and photos so that they can be shared with the rest of the world at some point throughout the day.

The news that was doing rounds was kind of overblown and for sure the company behind this app saw this as well. Snapchat has gone public with a message meant to clarify the news going around regarding the app’s updated terms. The company says that there is nothing that has changed for its millions of users. What it did was to simply modify the language that was used to describe what was already in place.

“What we did here was to rewrite the old Terms & Privacy Policy such they read like people usually talk”, Snapchat said in a statement. “We always work hard to be frank and clear with our customers”.

The company also revealed that it had added language to the Terms regarding making in-app purchases due to the newly introduced Replays as well as the lineup of cool products and services that are coming soon.

“To make it easier for you to find friends on Snapchat, we have clarified the info that will be visible to you”, the company wrote on its blog. What this means is that other Snapchatters will be able to access your name so as to easily find you on the platform. The info that is displayed to other users is determined by you thanks to the fact that the app allows for modification of this info in a manner you like.

In the new terms, users will find it a little easier to understand how and when their data is used by Snapchat. In addition, they give the company room to further go on with implementation of in-app purchases as well as many other features in future.
