WhatsApp vs. Telegram – Voice Calls Or Telegrams?
There are multiple options when it comes to messaging applications, but not many of them manage to become very popular right after they are released. It takes years for an instant messenger to convince millions of people to become loyal fans, but once they start adding more friends to their list of contacts, they don’t want to try another application. In this article, we’ve decided to compare two similar, but very different applications, WhatsApp and Telegram. The first one doesn’t need an introduction, as it’s been around for over five years and it’s used by over 900 million people, while the second application made its apparition two years ago and currently, it has over 60 million active users.
WhatsApp introduced in 2013 a yearly fee of 99 cents, but normally, the application is free in the first 12 months of use. The developers are paid from this annual subscription and they don’t allow ads to be displayed on the screen, to bother the users. 99 cents isn’t a big sum, considering that the application has many cool features, and the users can pay with their Pay Pal accounts or using a credit card.
Telegram is free for lifetime and it’s tied to your mobile number.
Telegram is more advantageous, because it allows its users to send larger files of up to 1.5GB, while WhatsApp limits its user to files of up to 16MB. Other developers cloned WhatsApp and brought similar applications which support files with a size of up to 50MB, but it’s still not enough. Moreover, Telegram supports all kinds of files which are inserted into messages, while WhatsApp allows its users to send only media files (photos, audio and video files).
WhatsApp can be installed on mobile devices running on iOS, Android, BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone, Nokia Series 40, Symbian, Tizen and now it supports Firefox OS as well. In order to access your account from a computer, you’ll need to use the WhatsApp web feature, by accessing the web.whatsapp.com website and scanning the QR code using your phone’s camera.
Telegram is compatible with devices running on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Ubuntu Touch, Windows, Linux and OS X, which means that it runs on smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs. You will need to install the application on a smartphone and register with your mobile number, and then you’ll be allowed to log into your account from a computer.
On WhatsApp, you can make free voice calls to other users, but they will consume your mobile data, so we recommend you to connect to a wireless network, in order to talk for free.
On Telegram, you will send secret chats with client-to-client encryption, which self-destruct after the recipient reads them.
