Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 vs. Apple A9 Chip – The War Between Android Phones And iPhones Continues

3

Apple and Qualcomm are two of the biggest chip makers, Apple has started building Ax chipsets in 2010 and used them only on its products, while Qualcomm’s famous Snapdragon series of chips is powering pretty much every Android flagship. The latest iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are powered by an A9 processor which is on based Samsung’s 14nm FinFET and for the first time, the RAM capacity has been doubled. Qualcomm is preparing the Snapdragon 820, which will arrive next year, on the high-end Android phones. So, how fast will be the Snapdragon 820 in comparison to the A9?

Speed

Qualcomm got to a 64-bit architecture using cores from ARM, but this was an uninspired decision, because the processors suffered from overheating issues. In order to fix the mistake, Qualcomm will go back to its old custom-built Kryo cores and will increase the clock speed up to 2.2GHz. The 820 processor will be 30 percent more energy efficient than its predecessor and will run cooler. Also, the processor will be built using a 14-nanometer manufacturing process.

Apple has a dual core processor on the ARMv8 architecture and it runs at 1.85GHz, being backed by 2GB of RAM. The A9 processor is 70 percent faster than the A8 and it had a better score than Samsung’s Galaxy S6 in single-core benchmark. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are powered by two different types of A9 processors – TSMC built it with a 16 nanometer process which extended the battery life by up to two hours, while Samsung built it with a 14nm process, and the battery life differed by 2-3 percent in real world usage.

Graphics

The fans have been waiting for 4K for a long time. The 810 is finally able to capture and stream 4K content, as this is supported by the Adreno 530 graphics processing unit, However, the 820 will come with the Adreno 530 GPU, which will be 40 percent faster and 40 percent more efficient.

The PowerVR GT7600 in the A9 chipset has six cores and it’s 90 percent faster than the previous GPU from the iPhone 6 and according to the latest benchmark tests performed, iPhone 6S’s graphical performance is 25 percent faster than Samsung’s Mali-T760MP8 GPU, which you’ll find inside the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge+ and Note 5.

Cameras

Qualcomm’ Snapdragon 820 will come with the 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra new image signal processing unit which will allow the manufacturers to place three cameras on their phones (2+1) and the next Android smartphones with cameras which will support up to 25MP will provide DSLR-quality photography.

Apple has upgraded both cameras of the iPhone 6S, which have resolutions of 12MP and 5MP. Now, this model supports 4K video capture, but some Android phones have better cameras. For example, in the DxOMark tests, Sony’s Xperia Z5 obtained a score of 87, being followed by the Galaxy S6 Edge with a score of 86, while the Nexus 6P scored 84. The iPhone 6S scored only 82.
