iPad Mini 4 vs. iPad Air 2 vs. iPad Pro – Which Tablet Is The Best For You?
The iPad Pro arrived on November 11, being Apple’s direct response to Microsoft’s Surface Pro line of tablets with a stylus. However, in September, Apple has announced the iPad Mini 4, but this tablet had only a short presentation, since all eyes were on the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. We didn’t receive a third iPad Air this year, so in this article, the iPad Air 2 will stack up against the iPad Mini 4 and iPad Pro.
Apple is using aluminum to build its devices and at first sight, their faces look almost identical. They have a rounded home button below the screen and they use Touch ID technology which turns your fingerprint into a password with which you can lock or unlock your tablet. Also, they have the rear camera in the same location – upper left corner, and the aluminum back is available in three variants of colors: Space Gray, Silver and Gold.
The iPad Mini 4 is much smaller than its siblings, having a height of 203.2mm, but it’s as thick as the iPad Air 2, measuring 6.1mm. The iPad Pro is Apple’s tallest tablet yet, measuring 305.7mm, but it’s also thicker at 6.9.
The WiFi version of the iPad Mini 4 weights 299grams, the iPad Air 2 weights 437grams, while the iPad Pro weights 713grams. As usual, the 3G/LTE version of every tablet is heavier, so the iPad Mini 4 weights 304grams, the iPad Air 2 has a weight of 444grams, while the iPad Pro weights 723grams, but you should know that you can attach a physical keyboard which you’ll purchase from Apple’s official website, where it’s priced at $169.
All three tablets are fitted with a LED-backlit IPS LCD screen and the highest pixel density was obtained by the iPad Mini 4 – 324 ppi, which has a 7.9-inch display with a resolution of 1536×2048 pixels. Also, its screen is 12 percent brighter than iPad Air 2’s 9.7-inch screen, but the colors are reproduced the same. The iPad Pro is larger, featuring a 12.9-inch screen whose resolution is higher at 2048×2732 pixels, but it gives a pixel density of 264ppi and it can reproduce a larger range of colors.
Performance and Battery Life
The older iPad Air 2 is more powerful than the iPad Mini 4, as it uses an Apple A8X triple-core 1.5 GHz Typhoon processor which is backed by a PowerVR GXA6850 (eight cores) GPU and 2GB of RAM. The ladder uses an Apple A8 dual-core 1.5 GHz Typhoon processor which is backed by PowerVR GX6450 (four cores) graphics and 2GB of RAM. The iPad Pro is the cream of the crop with the new Apple A9X Dual-core 2.26 GHz (Twister) processor which supports up to 4GB of RAM. This processor allows the iPad Pro to be faster than 80 percent of portable PCs and in Geekbench 3’s single core benchmark, it obtained a score of 2109, while in the multi-core benchmark, it had a score of 5501, resulting that it’s between 16 and 22 percent faster than the Air 2.
As for the battery life, all three tablets can last up to ten hours when browsing the internet while connected to a WiFi network. Also, they last up to nine hours when playing videos, and the iPad Mini 4 proved that it can last one and a half hours longer than its predecessors.
