Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 vs. iPad Mini 4 – Small Tablets For Every Large Pocket
In this article we’ll compare the small variant of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S2, which was released in September, in the same period as Apple’s fourth generation iPad Mini. We have two different tablets with a screen of a similar size, but if you want to know the rest of their specs, check out this comparison.
Designs and Displays
The iPad Mini 4 has aluminum back with a simple design, just like all the other Apple tablets, with the rear camera located in the left corner and the popular circular home button is placed below the screen, which measures 7.9-inch and supports a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels at 324 ppi. The fingerprint scanner allows you to make mobile payments using the Android Pay system, but the screen doesn’t benefit from the 3D Touch technology, which was introduced on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus smartphone flagships. The iPad Mini 4 comes in a WiFI variant which weights 299 grams, while the 3G/LTE model is 5 grams heavier. The dimensions of its body are 203.2 x 134.8 x 6.1 mm and this is one of the slimmest tablets on the market.
The Galaxy Tab S2 is even slimmer, as it measures 198.6 x 134.8 x 5.6 mm. The WiFi model weights 265 grams, while the LTE variant is 7 grams heavier, but still, the tablet is much lighter than its rival because it features a polycarbonate back. Samsung has placed the square rear camera in the top center, and the oval home button contains also a fingerprint scanner. The screen measures exactly 8-inch, but it’s a Super AMOLED and it gives a pixel density of 320 from the same resolution.
The iPad Mini 4 isn’t as powerful as the iPad Pro, featuring the 20nm A8 chipset that was used on the iPhone 6, and the dual core Typhoon processor runs at a speed of 1.5GHz, being backed by 2GB of RAM. The Tab S2 features a 20nm HKMG Exynos 5433 octa core processor clocked at 1.9GHz, which is paired with 3GB of RAM, which performed better in multi core tests. Also, the Tab S2 has expandable memory, and the available variants are 32GB and 64GB, which can be increased up to 128GB. The iPad Mini offers three variants of fixed internal storage with capacities of 16, 64 and 128GB.
Cameras and Batteries
Both tablets sport an 8MP rear camera without LED flash, but the iPad Mini 4 has received a bunch of features which make the images look more vibrant and clearer, but the Tab S2 is able to shoot 4K videos. As for the front cameras, the Apple tablet features the old 1.2MP shooter with face detection and FaceTime over Wi-Fi or Cellular, while the Tab S2 offers a decent 2.1MP secondary camera.
The battery of the iPad Mini 4 is much bigger at 5124 mAh (19.1 Wh), supporting 10 hours of multimedia usage, while the Tab S2 has a modest 4000 mAh battery which provides around 27 hours of talk time.
