Microsoft was planning to roll out the Windows 10 mobile upgrades to the Windows Phone 8.1 devices in December, but the users will need to wait until early 2016 to upgrade to the latest OS version. As you know, Windows 10 mobile came installed on the Lumia 950 and 950 XL devices that have been released in November and Microsoft has promised that soon enough, the rest of Windows Phone 8.1 devices will receive the upgrades.
Microsoft’s plans have changed, because recently, a spokesperson told ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley that “The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones”, but this isn’t a big problem, because the company has achieved an important goal in December: all computers and phones registered on the Insider program have received the latest Windows 10 build and the users receive synchronized updates, at the same time, on both their PCs and mobile device running on Windows 10.
Microsoft has also provided a list of Lumia devices that are programmed to get the Windows 10 update: 430, 435, 532, 535, 540, 635 (1GB RAM), 640, 640 XL, 735, 830 and 930. More devices will follow, but they will need to meet the requirements: to have an internal memory of at least 8GB, because otherwise, they won’t be able to handle Windows 10.
Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL?
However, in case you want to buy one of the new Lumia devices, then here are their specs: the smaller variant measures 145 x 73.2 x 8.2 mm, it weights 150 grams and has a large circular rear camera on the back of 20MP (using PureView technology, Carl Zeiss optics, OIS, autofocus, triple-LED RGB flash and which is capable of recording 4K videos), while on the front side sits a 5MP camera with an aperture of f/2.4. The screen measures 5.2-inch and its resolution is 1440 x 2560 pixels at 564ppi. This model is powered by the weaker Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 hexa core cocked at 1.82GHz, being backed by 3GB of RAM. The users can add a microSD card and increase the internal memory from 32GB to 200GB, or talk on 3G for 18 hours thanks to the 3000mAh battery.
The Lumia 950 XL phablet has the same pair of cameras, but its processor is much faster, as Microsoft has used the latest Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core CPU clocked at 2GHz, which runs with 3GB of RAM. Also, the screen measures 5.7-inch and it supports also a QHD resolution, but the pixel density is lower at 518ppi. The battery has a capacity of 3340 mAh and it offers an extra hour of talk time.
