It’s been years since Google made the Pro version of Google Earth free of charge to anyone who wishes to use its advanced tools and features. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the instructions they gave at that time doesn’t seem to work in the present day.
The post announcing the switch from $400 product to free software was published on the official blog for Google Maps. It was posted on January 30, 2015 and the instructions then were to get a free key and download Google Earth Pro. The link to get the key seems broken now but luckily, you don’t need to go through all that today. Here’s how to download Google Earth Pro for free:
- Download Google Earth Pro
There’s only one place to get the Pro version from and it’s through the official Google Earth site (google.com/earth). When there, click on Older Versions to take you to the page for downloading Google Earth Pro. You will then be taken to a page that says “Earth Pro on desktop” with a button that says Download – click on that.
A page detailing the terms of service will be presented. You can read on if you want to but you can also click on the button that says Agree and Download to start the process.
- Click on the installer to start the installation process
If you’re a Windows user, click on the GoogleEarthProSetup.exe file that was downloaded after you clicked on the Agree and Download button. This is the installer that will put Google Earth Pro on your computer. Just leave it to do its thing.
- Login your Google Earth Pro
You will be asked to enter certain details when you start Pro for the first time. The details that will be asked include your username and license key. Use your email address as your username and the license key will simply be GEPFREE. Click on Log In and you’re good to go. Additional tip: tick the box that says Enable automatic login so you don’t have to repeatedly enter your license key and username.
If you aren’t interested with the advanced features of Google Earth Pro, you can take a pick between the free Google Earth or Google Street View.
